Delhi Police has registered a case against Congress Lok Sabha MP Angomcha Bimol Akoijam on sexual harassment charges and insult of a woman’s modesty. The FIR was registered on October 11 after a complaint was received by Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) chief security officer to the police, said a police official.
The development comes on the day of JNU abruptly removed Akoijam from his position as a professor after the institution conducted an internal probe into sexual harassment complaints by female students. Akoijam, who belongs to Inner Manipur constituency in Lok Sabha, had dismissed the allegations and questioned the university’s investigation process.
The police investigation and the university's disciplinary action are separate matters. FIR registration does not establish criminal guilt.
Delhi Police Register FIR Against Bimol Akoijam
According to police officials, the FIR was registered at the Vasant Kunj North police station on Sunday, October 11, after a complaint by JNU’s chief security officer.
The case is based on Sections 75, 75(1)(i), 75(1)(iv) and 79 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). These provisions cover sexual harassment and acts, words or gestures intended to insult a woman’s modesty, among others.
Rahul Gandhi’s associate and Congress MP Angomcha Bimol Akoijam has been suspended from his position as a professor at JNU over allegations of sexual harassment of female students, for marks! Despite the seriousness of the allegations, Congress has taken NO ACTION against him. Rahul Gandhi’s silence is deafening. Police said an investigation was initiated. The complaint by the university’s chief security officer led to the registration of the case, while the underlying allegations are those of previous complaints from students.
The FIR is the latest in a campaign that has raised questions about campus safety, sexual harassment complaints and the procedures of educational institutions in dealing with faculty claims against members of the faculty.
Akoijam has denied the allegations against him. His response has also questioned the university’s conduct of the inquiry and the claims about his cooperation with the proceedings.
JNU dismisses Professor after complaints from 11 students
JNU has dismissed Akoijam from the position after an internal investigation by its Internal Committee into sexual harassment. A university order states that in light of their investigation, the committee has recommended major punishment based on its findings.
Akoijam was a member of the Centre for the Study of Social Systems under JNU School of Social Sciences. Besides his academic career, he serves as a Congress MP for Inner Manipur.
There were at least 11 female students who filed complaints against him in May 2026, the complaint said. They alleged he made inappropriate and sexually suggestive remarks during academic activities (e.g., viva exams). Some students also alleged he invited students to his campus residence under the guise of meetings or gatherings and took part in inappropriate conduct.
These allegations formed the basis of the university’s internal proceedings. The dismissal order, signed by Vice-Chancellor Santishree D Pandit, said the university had considered the available facts and the Internal Committee’s report before issuing the penalty.
The university said the decision was made in accordance with the applicable service rules. Akoijam has contested the process and denied the allegations.
Akoijam Calls Dismissal A ‘Witch Hunt’, Questions Inquiry Process
After his dismissal, Akoijam said the action against him was a “witch hunt” and questioned whether the university had followed the required procedures.
He has disputed claims that he collaborated with the inquiry and expressed doubt about what he had told the university’s Internal Committee in letters. He also maintains the allegations are false and malicious.
The case has raised the question of how complaints are handled at universities and whether investigations are conducted as per established procedures. There should be an investigation to be undertaken by institutions and the accused should have the right to respond to the charges (and challenge the procedure if necessary).
The JNU Teachers’ Association has also expressed concern about the process of Akoijam’s dismissal and what were the factors that led to the suspension of Akoijam and the role of the authority that awarded it. The university’s response has been the focus of these concerns.
The criminal investigation will now proceed separately from the university’s disciplinary action. Police have not arrived at a final finding in the case, and the allegations are being investigated and legal proceedings are ongoing.
Akoijam’s position as a sitting MP from Manipur has also brought political attention to the controversy. But the main issues are the allegations of students, the findings and procedures of the university inquiry and the police investigation.
