New violence in Manipur has claimed nine lives, with shootings and arson reported in some hill districts. Security and tension between Naga and Kuki communities have increased, and the state government has been assured of the Centre’s assistance in restoring peace and normalcy.
The death toll rose to nine by Sunday, October 11, 2026, after incidents reported on Friday night and Saturday. The developments came as Manipur Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh met Modi in New Delhi to discuss the situation in the state.
Nine People Were Killed In Fresh Clashes
According to media accounts, the violence affected Kamjong, Kangpokpi and Ukhrul districts. The violence involved shootings, attacks on people and the burning of houses.
According to media reports, six of those killed were Naga people, two were from the Kuki community and one was Nepali. The deaths occurred as armed groups and the communities living in the affected areas have been at war with each other.
The situation got tense after a Kuki woman was killed in a clash between security and an armed group near Chassad village in Kamjong district on Friday night.
There was also violence on Saturday with village guards and other people killed, as well as house fires, the report said. Many houses were also torched and the people living in the affected areas were afraid.
Houses Set Ablaze as Security Concerns Grow
There were reports that around 14 houses belonging to members of Naga and Kuki communities were set ablaze in the violence.
There were reported incidents in a number of places including villages in Kamjong and Kangpokpi districts. Authorities were trying to prevent more attacks and protect residents as tensions increased.
Additional security personnel were sent in to manage the situation in affected areas to help control the situation. Restrictions were also imposed around Chassad to prevent further disturbances.
The latest violence has added to the security challenges facing Manipur, which has experienced repeated ethnic tensions and displacement in recent years. The situation remains sensitive and authorities want to avoid further escalation.
SEVEN DEAD, A POLICE STATION BURNT. WHAT IS HAPPENING TO MANIPUR? Seven lives have been lost in a single day following violent incidents across different parts of Manipur. Suspected Myanmar-based militants have reportedly attacked Ningchou village in Kamjong district, while deadly violence has also been reported along Makui IT Road and at Chassad. Even a police station in Kamjong has reportedly been burnt down. Further, two Nagas from Makui Ashang village in Kangpokpi district have also been reported missing. Particularly disturbing is the killing of Sandeep Rai, a member of the Nepali community, in an alleged KRA ambush at Yolen near TM Kasom Litan in Ukhrul district. This shows how the violence is spreading and claiming innocent lives across communities. What is going on? How weak have we become that armed militants can kill people, burn down police stations and challenge the authority of the Indian state with such impunity? This is a serious threat to our country’s internal security and sovereignty. All illegally held weapons must be recovered, launch decisive operations against armed militant groups and strengthen our Indo-Myanmar border. Both state and central security forces must act without further delay.

PM Modi Assures Support to Restore Peace
Narendra Modi assured Manipur Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh of all possible assistance from the Centre to restore peace and normalcy.
The chief minister met Modi in New Delhi last Saturday and gave him an update on efforts to remedy the situation. The state’s efforts to restore transportation services, to continue the flow of essential goods and to address people’s problems, among other things, were discussed.
The chief minister also raised development-related requests, including highways and upgrading the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences in Imphal.
Modi acknowledged the state government and assured support in addressing reasonable concerns while taking the aspirations of Manipur’s people into account.
Chief Minister Appeals for Peace and Restraint
Khemchand Singh decried the killings and ordered authorities to respond in a timely manner to address the situation and to restore law and order and the safety of residents.
Community leaders and civil society organisations must also be moderate and collaborate, he said.
The recent incidents are just the start; security measures remain important in addition to dialogue and cooperation between the communities. The Centre has made promises but trust and prevention of further violence are still very important issues for the state government.
In the short run, authorities will need to keep watch on affected districts while the peace and stability of Manipur continues to be maintained, he said.
