Prithvi Shaw Still Dreams of India Return: ‘Comeback Is Always at the Back of My Mind’

Indian cricketer Prithvi Shaw hasn’t given up on his dream of representing the country again. He has been through several difficult phases in his career but the young opening batter is determined to get another chance in Indian team. Shaw himself said that an international comeback still motivates him as he rebuilds his cricketing career.

Shaw was once one of India’s most exciting batting prospects. At a young age he caught the attention of everyone with his performances captaining India to Under-19 World Cup title in 2018; made an impressive Test debut against West Indies by scoring a century on his Test debut.

However his time with the national team didn’t pan out as expected. Shaw has played five Tests, six ODIs and one T20 International for India. His last international was against Sri Lanka in July 2021.

Since then the batter has had injuries, inconsistent performances and concerns over fitness and discipline. His difficult period also included being dropped from Mumbai’s Ranji Trophy squad in 2024 and going unsold at the IPL 2025 mega auction.

Instead of letting these setbacks end his ambitions Shaw has been trying to rebuild his career through domestic cricket. He moved from Mumbai to Maharashtra for a new environment and opportunities to show what he can do.

His Ranji Trophy performances in 2025-26 were encouraging signs. Shaw made 537 runs in seven matches (including a scintillating 222 off just 156 deliveries against Chandigarh). That innings showed attacking batting and reminded cricket followers of what made him a highly rated prospect.

Shaw also returned to the Delhi Capitals set-up for IPL 2026 after being picked by the franchise. He didn’t get a chance to play in any match during the season but his return was another step towards reviving his career.

Shaw has previously said he is working harder than ever before to get back into international cricket. He told reporters “I’m putting so much more effort in now than I did before”. I was working much harder and giving everything towards that comeback goal.”

Shaw also spoke to India Today in October 2026 about changes in his lifestyle and priorities. He said he is now more focused on cricket, family and himself. He has cut down on social media activity and wants to stay away from unnecessary distractions.

The 26-year-old also felt consistency was key (several talented openers jostling for places in the Indian team). “Individual ambitions have to come after what the team needs so consistency is key to getting to that level,” Shaw said.

For Shaw returning to the Indian dressing room isn’t about answering critics or proving people wrong. It’s about him; about his own development and letting his performances do the talking.

The road back won’t be easy with places in Indian cricket up for grabs but Shaw’s resolve shows he isn’t ready to walk away from his biggest ambition.

For now domestic cricket is his biggest platform. Runs, performances and discipline could bring India closer to him. His journey is just beginning and the thought of wearing an Indian jersey again is a powerful incentive.
