Heavy rainfall in Tamil Nadu has resulted in waterlogging, flooding and disruption of many districts in many areas, as the northeast monsoon has intensified. Residential areas, roads and agricultural land have been affected and in Virudhunagar district a 17-year-old student is dead in a wall collapse.
The teen, a Class 12 student, died after a house wall collapsed near Sattur on Thursday night, October 22. Her mother was also injured, according to reports. The collapse occurred in persistent rain and the weak structures were in danger of falling apart when heavy rain hits the area.
Most of Tamil Nadu is inundated with flooded homes and roads and transport has been disrupted. Chennai's IMD has advised the state has been hit with increasing rainfall and local authorities have issued an advisory.
Teenager killed in wall collapse in Virudhunagar
The fatal incident took place in the Sattur area of Virudhunagar district. A 17-year-old girl studying in class 12 lost her life after a wall of a house collapsed during heavy rainfall on Thursday night.
Her mother was injured. The collapse and the condition of the damaged structure have raised doubts about the safety of homes in the presence of sustained rain.
Heavy rainfall can weaken walls, foundations and other structures in buildings, especially those already damaged and have poor drainage. Residents living in old buildings or homes with cracked walls should be wary of long spells of rain.
The incident has added to concerns about public safety as districts continue to experience heavy downpours.
Waterlogging and flooding due to heavy rain causes waterlogging and flooding.
The heavy rain is affecting both urban and rural areas of Tamil Nadu. Waterlogging in Chennai is still present in some parts of the city, and several southern districts have reported flooding in residential neighborhoods and agricultural areas.
In Kanyakumari district, floodwater reached homes in the Kollamcode municipal district, affecting residents and damaging household goods and vehicles. Local authorities have been working to remove water and check drainage systems.
Waterlogging has also been reported in parts of Tirunelveli, Tenkasi and Thoothukudi districts. In some places, overflowing water bodies and increased river flows have added to the challenges faced by residents.
Heavy showers have affected road conditions and traffic movement in Chennai. Waterlogged stretches, potholes and muddy roads have made commuting difficult in some neighborhoods.
The continued rainfall has also affected public services and daily life, with school closures announced in some areas as a precaution.
Farmers face losses as rainwater inundates crops.
The impacts of rain are not limited to the residential areas and transport networks. Farmers in parts of Madurai district have reported inundation of newly planted paddy fields.
More than 140 acres of newly planted paddy were reported submerged in affected villages, raising concerns over crop damage. Drainage problems and the condition of irrigation canals are some of the factors that could compound water accumulation in agricultural fields, farmers say.
Long-term waterlogging can damage young crops and increase the risk of crop loss if excess water does not drain away quickly. Farmers in affected areas are closely monitoring conditions as more rain is expected to pour in.
The rainfall has also contributed to increased inflows into reservoirs and dams across the state. While improved storage can benefit water availability, high inflows require careful monitoring, especially where rivers and streams are already swollen.
The IMD Forecast: More Rain Likely Across Tamil Nadu
The IMD has forecast further rainfall across Tamil Nadu and Puducherry as the northeast monsoon remains active. Weather systems developing over the Bay of Bengal are expected to contribute to additional showers.
Heavy to very heavy rainfall has been predicted for several districts, including Kanyakumari, Tirunelveli, Tenkasi, Thoothukudi, Madurai, Dindigul, Ramanathapuram, Virudhunagar and parts of the Western Ghats.
Chennai and neighboring areas may also experience further heavy showers, with the forecast indicating the possibility of intense rainfall on October 24 and 25. Rainfall intensity may vary by location, so residents should follow the latest district-specific weather alerts.
The continued rainfall could lead to further waterlogging, slower traffic and temporary disruptions, especially in low-lying areas and places with inadequate drainage.
Safety Measures as Heavy Rain Continues
Residents in rain-affected districts are advised to take precautions while the downpours continue.
- Avoid walking or driving through flooded roads when the depth or current of the water is unclear.
- Stay away from swollen rivers, overflowing streams and waterlogged low-lying areas.
- Keep a safe distance from damaged walls, unstable buildings and structures showing cracks.
- Avoid exposed areas during thunderstorms and stay away from electrical poles or fallen power lines.
- Follow official weather alerts and instructions issued by local authorities.
People living in vulnerable houses should seek assistance if they notice structural damage or signs that a wall may be unstable.
With the northeast monsoon expected to remain active, Tamil Nadu faces continued challenges from flooding, waterlogging and rainfall-related damage. Authorities and residents will need to remain vigilant as weather conditions develop over the coming days.
