Drugs and Smuggling Through Bangladesh
Tripura shares an 856-kilometre international border with Bangladesh, with the neighbouring country surrounding the state on three sides. The border passes through villages, agricultural land, riverine stretches and densely populated areas, making border management a continuing challenge for the BSF.
Smuggling across the India-Bangladesh border has remained a longstanding problem. The activities include the movement of narcotics, cannabis, pharmaceutical products, cough syrups, cattle, gold, counterfeit currency and other high-value goods.
The scale of the problem is reflected in figures presented by the Tripura government in the state Assembly. Between August 2023 and January 2024, the BSF seized 2,212.87 kg of cannabis, 11,411 bottles of cough syrup, heroin, foreign currency, cattle and other goods along the Tripura-Bangladesh border. The seizures also included clothes worth more than Rs 2.31 crore.
The problem is not limited to narcotics and consumer goods. The Ministry of Home Affairs has documented the historical activities of militant organisations such as the National Liberation Front of Tripura (NLFT) and the All Tripura Tiger Force (ATTF), including their links to camps and safe havens in Bangladesh, possession of illegal arms and ammunition, extortion and armed activities. Both organisations have been declared unlawful associations under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act.
Modern smuggling networks have also been associated with the movement of high-value goods, including gold. In Jan 2026, the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence announced a gold-smuggling investigation involving the Indo-Bangladesh border in Tripura, in which a syndicate was found to have smuggled foreign-origin gold into India before transporting it to Delhi.
These activities have repeatedly placed the BSF in confrontation with suspected smugglers and other individuals operating near the international border. While also leading to the lynching of people on suspicion of smuggling within villages
