Gurugram Introduces Push-Button Pedestrian Signals to Make Road Crossings Safer

Gurugram is another step closer to pedestrian safety as push-button pedestrian signals have been installed at some road crossings. This will make crossing busy roads safer, easier and more convenient for pedestrians (where heavy traffic makes it difficult for people to cross).

The new signals allow pedestrians to request a crossing phase by pressing the button. Once activated, traffic signal system will offer pedestrians an opportunity (depending on how programmed) to cross the road safely.

People who walk along busy roads (senior citizens, children, office-goers etc.) will benefit from it crossing a crowded road can be stressful for pedestrians especially during peak hours when vehicles keep moving with no gaps between them.

Push button pedestrian signals are a more organised way to handle this. Rather than waiting for an uncertain gap between vehicles, pedestrians press the button on the sign requesting a crossing opportunity. The system is designed to coordinate pedestrian movement with vehicular traffic.

Road safety is an issue in rapidly growing cities like Gurugram as well. The city has grown in terms of residential population, commercial establishments and traffic movement. More vehicles use its roads but pedestrians too have to negotiate busy intersections and crossing points.

The introduction of pedestrian-friendly infrastructure is therefore an important part of safer urban roads. Flyovers, underpasses and wider roads manage vehicle movement but facilities such as pedestrian signals make sure people walking are not forgotten in city planning.

The push-button system can also encourage pedestrians to use crossing points rather than trying to cross roads between moving vehicles. This might produce more predictable movement for both motorists and pedestrians.

However, the success of this initiative will also depend on proper installation, regular maintenance and public awareness. Pedestrians must know how to operate the buttons and wait for the crossing signal before stepping onto the road; motorists must respect pedestrian signals and stop when required.

The installation of these signals shows that urban transport infrastructure is becoming more inclusive. Safer pedestrian crossings are important for people who walk every day to get to work.

As Gurugram grows bigger and bigger such small but important improvements could make everyday commuting more bearable. The initiative also makes it clear that roads need to be designed for everyone not just those travelling in private vehicles.

Once pedestrian push-button signals are introduced crossing busy roads could be more organised for residents. The next step will be to make sure that these facilities are accessible, functional and maintained across the city.
