Maragatham Kumaravel was elected from Madurantakam constituency while Sathyabama was elected from Dharapuram. Their swearing-in adds to TVK's representation in the Tamil Nadu Assembly and brings the two legislators into their formal roles as elected representatives.

The ceremony was before the Speaker in his chamber rather than as part of a larger public event in the Assembly hall. Such oath-taking ceremonies formally recognise elected members and allow them to begin carrying out their legislative duties in accordance with Assembly rules.

Maragatham Kumaravel Takes Oath As Madurantakam MLA

Maragatham Kumaravel, who was elected from Madurantakam, took oath in front of Speaker J.C.D. Prabhakar at the state secretariat. Her swearing-in is formally the first step of her entry into the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly as a representative of the constituency.

An MLA’s duties include addressing local issues, engaging in debates in parliament, scrutinising government decisions and representing constituency concerns in the state legislature. The oath is also a signal of the member’s commitment to fulfilling those duties in accordance with the Constitution and the rules of the Assembly.

Kumaravel being in the legislature will provide Madurantakam's constituency with a representative who can bring local issues to the attention of the state government. Public services, infrastructure, employment, education and other constituency-level priorities can be part of the work done by an elected representative depending on local needs and public concerns.

So her oath-taking is an important procedural milestone, allowing her to assume the responsibilities associated with her elected position.

Sathyabama Sworn In As Dharapuram MLA

Sathyabama, elected from Dharapuram, also took the oath before Speaker J.C.D. Prabhakar. Her swearing-in is a step she will go through to be an MLA in the Tamil Nadu Assembly.

Sathyabama will be responsible for representing voters from Dharapuram as a legislator and will be part of the legislative process. That means being involved in discussions about state policy, residents’ issues and in Assembly proceedings according to the rules of the Assembly.

The role of an MLA extends beyond participation in debates. Representation also involves listening to residents and bringing local issues to the attention of relevant departments and authorities.

Her entry into the Assembly will give Dharapuram a formally sworn-in representative ready to participate in the legislature’s work. The effect of that representation will depend on the issues raised, the follow-up undertaken and the decisions made through the state’s legislative and administrative processes.

By-Election Victories Brought The Two Legislators Back To The Assembly

The oath-taking followed the by-election victories in Madurantakam and Dharapuram. The two legislators contested on TVK tickets. The result was declared on October 9, after polling on October 6. According to reports, Maragatham Kumaravel won Madurantakam by 20,040 votes, while Sathyabama won Dharapuram by 9,471 votes.

Both women had won their respective constituencies as AIADMK candidates in the 2026 Assembly election. They later resigned from their MLA positions and joined TVK, leading to the by-elections. As a result, they returned to the legislature having been re-elected under their new political affiliation.

The results also increased TVK’s representation in the 234-member Tamil Nadu Assembly. After the by-elections, the party’s strength had been reported to be 109, including the Speaker, though the number published can vary depending on how the Speaker’s position is counted.

What Happens After The Oath-Taking?

With all the formalities completed, Maragatham Kumaravel and Sathyabama can take part in Assembly proceedings as sworn-in members. In their role, they represent their constituency, speak in discussions with the parliament and point out problems affecting the public.

The two constituencies could bring different local concerns to the Assembly, including public infrastructure, access to services, jobs and development concerns. They will have to do their jobs as representatives well in the community and work in the legislature.

The oath-taking ceremony at the secretariat was therefore more than a formal event. In fact, it was the completion of the immediate process after the by-elections while two elected representatives returned to their legislative roles.

For TVK, the ceremony also formalised the addition of the two seats won in the recent by-elections. The next step will be their participation in the Assembly and the work they do on behalf of voters in Madurantakam and Dharapuram.
