Google Offers Buyouts in 5 Countries: How Much Will Employees Get to Leave?

Google has expanded its voluntary employee exit programme to five countries as the tech giant tries to control rising costs while continuing to invest heavily in artificial intelligence (AI). Under the programme, selected employees are given financial compensation if they leave voluntarily.

The five countries in the latest expansion are Canada, France, Germany, Japan and Switzerland. Google said it started extending these offers in June 2026 but it wasn’t until a Reuters story on November 4 that the move received wider attention.

A Google spokesperson said some teams had introduced voluntary exit programmes with severance packages in 2025. The company expanded the initiative internationally in June this year to support its future priorities.

What Is Google Offering Employees

The most detailed information about financial benefits came from Switzerland where eligible employees who accepted the offer got one month’s salary for every year of service with the company.

However, compensation is capped at 12 months’ salary so employees who have been with the company for 12 or more years could get a maximum payout of one year’s salary.

Google reportedly announced the program to eligible Swiss employees in mid-June and told applicants by mid July about their decisions. Employees who accepted the offer began leaving the company in August.

People familiar with the matter said that programme covered several divisions in Switzerland but not Google’s artificial intelligence research division DeepMind.

The severance terms for employees in Canada, France, Germany and Japan have not been made public so we don’t know if the same compensation formula applies to all five countries or not.

Google hasn’t yet told us how many employees have accepted the latest voluntary exit offers. In Switzerland at least four people from one team of about 50 employees reportedly took the package.

Which Employees Are Excluded

The voluntary exit programme doesn’t apply to every employee in Google. Previous rounds of buyout offers excluded employees working in Google Cloud and DeepMind.

These divisions are important to Alphabet’s long term strategy (especially as the company increases its focus on AI and cloud computing). The latest international expansion seems to be doing that too.

Google executives have been saying for years that AI and cloud computing are major areas for future investment and hiring.

Why Is Google Offering Voluntary Buyouts

The move comes as Alphabet is under increasing pressure to control operating expenses even as it spends billions on AI infrastructure, computing capacity and new technologies.

The company has been restructuring its workforce and shifting resources to business areas it believes are important for future growth.

The voluntary programme also gives employees who may not be aligned with Google’s changing priorities or working environment an opportunity to leave (with financial compensation).

But voluntary exits don’t automatically mean no layoffs either. Reuters reported that Google had followed voluntary exit offers to a division with layoffs in at least one case.

Google Joins Wider Technology Industry Restructuring

Google’s move comes shortly after Microsoft announced its own voluntary buyout programme covering around 60,000 employees.

The developments show how major technology companies are re-examining workforce requirements as they increase investments in artificial intelligence.

For now Google’s latest program is available only to selected employees in five countries. India isn’t on the list announced yet and company hasn’t said publicly if other countries will be covered in future.

The number of employees who ultimately leave under the program is unknown.
