Keisha Lance Bottoms Makes US History as First Black Woman Governor, Flips Georgia

Bottoms defeated Republican Rick Jackson in a close race that ended more than two decades of Republicans holding Georgia’s governor’s office. It’s an important moment for women in politics Black women have been barred from the country’s highest offices since history began.

From Atlanta Mayor to Governor

Keisha Lance Bottoms has no new experience in public service. She was mayor of Atlanta from 2018-2022 and nationally recognized for her leadership during several difficult times.

Her time as mayor was also defined by the COVID-19 pandemic, protests over the killing of George Floyd and public safety issues. Her administration was hit with a ransomware attack which disrupted several city government services.

After her mayoral term ended Bottoms moved on to national politics. She was senior adviser and director of the White House Office of Public Engagement in Joe Biden’s administration. That job helped solidify her place in national Democratic politics.

Georgia Witnesses a Major Political Shift

The result is significant because Republicans had controlled Georgia’s governor’s office since 2002. Bottoms’ win thus signals a major shift in the state’s political map.

Her opponent Rick Jackson (a billionaire healthcare businessman) reportedly spent more than $200 million of his own money on the campaign. Issues raised by her campaign were public safety, tax cuts and limits on government regulations.

The bottoms meanwhile were on healthcare access, economic affordability and policy issues related to policies supported by President Trump.

Georgia has become a battleground state in American politics. Georgia’s diverse electorate Black voters especially have been at the center of recent elections.

Healthcare and Cost of Living Among Key Priorities. Healthcare and cost of living are two areas where major investment is needed says the NHS Long Term Plan for example healthcare spending will increase by £16bn (€20bn; $23bn) over the next decade but the cost of living will increase by £5bn (€7bn; $8bn).

During her campaign Bottoms made a lot of noise about things that affected ordinary households.

Expanding Medicaid was one of her main goals so uninsured residents could get health care. She also wanted local governments to be able to eliminate sales taxes on groceries so families could afford rising costs.

Another issue she brought up was the amount of data centres being built across Georgia. Bottoms wanted a pause on new projects so the state could see how they would affect electricity consumption and infrastructure.

But turning those promises into policies won’t be easy either. Republican control of the state legislature would make it harder for her administration to push healthcare, taxation and economic reform through (e.g., Obamacare).

A turning point for women in American politics.

Bottoms’ win is all the more remarkable because Democrat Stacey Abrams lost two consecutive gubernatorial races (2018 and 2022).

Bottoms won the election by breaking through a major political wall and establishing precedent for Black women seeking leadership in the United States.

Her win also gives Democrats an important victory in a state that has become increasingly competitive between the two major political parties.

As she takes over Georgia people will watch to see if she can deliver on campaign promises and ride out the political storm ahead.

Bottoms’ election is not just a political victory for him. It is an important moment in American history and a new chapter in Georgia’s political leadership.
