Protests in Bilbao, Spain, turned violent on Oct 26, with masked demonstrators clashing with authorities and setting vehicles and public property on fire. The unrest followed opposition to a planned appearance by the man self-described as the “aspirational Charlie Kirk of Spain”, who was scheduled for an event near the University of Deusto.
The incident comes as Spain continues to witness public anger over its housing crisis. Nationwide demonstrations intensified following the eviction of an 87-year-old woman from her long-time home in Madrid, after which she died in hospital. However, the Bilbao protests were specifically organised in opposition to the planned appearance of the controversial commentator.
Scorched metal and billowing smoke across Bilbao. Rioters have taken to the streets, torching cars and bins amid fierce friction tied to the botched Vito Quiles event. The region is on high alert. ⚠️🔥 #Bilbao #Spain #Protests #Breaking https://t.co/tygAcgbPJq

Protests Escalate Despite Cancellation
Thousands of demonstrators reportedly gathered near the University of Deusto to oppose the event, with protesters raising objections to the speaker’s political rhetoric and public appearances. The university suspended campus activities and closed its premises as a precaution after security concerns were raised.
The event was subsequently cancelled before its scheduled start. However, the situation escalated later in the evening, with masked groups reportedly setting fire to rubbish containers, a police motorcycle and several parked vehicles. Reports also described projectiles being thrown towards police officers and a police station in the Deusto neighbourhood.
The Basque regional security department condemned the violence, alleging that the disturbances continued despite the cancellation. Authorities reported arrests, with the number subsequently increasing as the investigation progressed.
Controversy Surrounding the Speaker
The planned appearance had drawn criticism from anti-fascist groups and students opposed to the speaker’s political messaging. His public profile has also faced controversy over a separate case involving a woman with a reported 75% intellectual disability.
According to reports, a Madrid court ordered his arrest and presentation before the court in connection with proceedings concerning the alleged humiliation of the woman and using it as clout.
The episode has reignited debate over political provocation, freedom of expression and the right to peaceful protest. While demonstrators have the right to oppose speakers and their views, arson and attacks on public property put lives at risk and undermine peaceful political participation.
The central question now is whether the violence in Bilbao will overshadow the original protest and lead to further confrontations. With authorities investigating the disturbances, the incident has once again exposed the tensions surrounding political polarisation in Spain.
