Trump Says He Will Accept US Midterm Results as Democrats Poised to Win House

US President Donald Trump has said he is willing to accept the results of the 2026 midterm elections even though his Republican Party faces a major political setback as Democrats are projected to take control of the House of Representatives. The election results could change the political balance in Washington and pose new challenges for Trump’s administration.

Trump made those remarks during an interview with The New York Times on Tuesday, November 3 and “expected to work with Democrats if they took control of Congress,” Reuters reported on Nov. 4, 2026. He also said he expected to work with Democrats if they took over Congress.

The move comes as voters hand down an important verdict on the first two years of Trump’s second term in office.

Democrats Poised to Win Control of the House

Democrats seem to have won the November 3 midterm elections handily and are in a good position to take control of the US House of Representatives.

All 435 House seats were up for election so the results were particularly important in determining where American politics would go over the next two years.

A Democratic majority would give the opposition party more control over legislation, government spending and congressional investigations.

It could also make Trump’s legislative agenda more difficult because Republicans would not have the same control over the House.

Trump Signals Willingness to Work With Democrats

Trump’s reported comments indicate he is prepared to deal with a divided Congress.

The president told the New York Times that he was willing to accept midterm results and expected both parties to agree on important issues. Reuters reported that the president told the NYT: “I’m willing to take midterm results,” he said. “I expect them to work out things important to us.”

The comments are important because Trump had been asked before whether he would accept an unfavourable election result.

On October 27 he had told reporters that he would accept results only if they were honest elections.

His latest reported remarks therefore grabbed attention as election projections began to point towards Democratic gains.

Senate Control Remains Uncertain

Democrats are projected to win the House but the battle for the US Senate is more difficult.

Several close Senate races have made it difficult to predict the final balance of power.

A Democratic Senate would have more influence over presidential appointments (senior government officials and federal judges).

If Republicans keep the Senate but Democrats win the House, then the United States could enter a period of divided government.

Such an arrangement could affect negotiations on budgets, government policies and major legislative proposals.

What a Democratic House Could Mean for Trump

A Democratic majority in the House could increase congressional scrutiny of the Trump administration.

Democratic lawmakers could launch investigations, request government records and hold hearings with administration officials.

They could also challenge Republican-sponsored legislative proposals and push for changes to government spending plans.

But Trump would still have presidential powers the ability to veto legislation passed by Congress, for instance.

The degree of political confrontation will depend on the final election results and whether or not both sides are willing to negotiate.

A Major Political Test Ahead

The 2026 midterm elections are an important test of public support for Trump’s second administration.

Economic issues, the cost of living, fuel prices and foreign policy have all been prominent in the campaign.

If Democrats do take the House, Washington could be in for a different political landscape during the last years of Trump’s presidency.

The next few weeks will be crucial as election results are confirmed and the new balance of congressional power is laid out.
