Weeks after being released from judicial custody, Mohammed Adinan (22), an accused in a POCSO case, allegedly broke into the house of the 14-year-old survivor in Perumbavoor, Kerala, dragged her outside and attempted to kill her by slitting her throat with a knife.
After hearing the commotion, a young neighbour rushed to the girl's aid and tried to save her. Both the survivor and the neighbour sustained injuries during the attack. The girl reportedly suffered injuries to her hands while trying to defend herself.
After hearing the girl's screams, local residents began gathering at the scene. The accused fled and hid in nearby bushes. Police, acting on information from residents, searched the area and apprehended him. He was subsequently produced before the court on Tuesday, Nov 3, and remanded to judicial custody.
During the court proceedings, the defence reportedly claimed that the accused was not mentally stable. After the proceedings, Adinan jumped from the first floor of the court complex and sustained injuries. He was taken to hospital for medical attention and was subsequently remanded to judicial custody. However, reports differ on whether the jump was an attempt to escape or an act of self-harm. The police reportedly ruled out an escape attempt, according to a PTI report.
The original POCSO case
The original case was registered on Aug 8, 2026, under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, following allegations that Adinan had sexually assaulted the minor girl. He was arrested and remanded to judicial custody, where he remained for a little over two months before being granted bail on Oct 18.
According to police, the accused allegedly attacked the survivor out of resentment over the complaint she had filed against him, which had led to his arrest and imprisonment.

Questions over bail and the safety of survivors
The accused was granted bail, but the specific grounds on which the court granted it have not been established from the reports currently available. The incident has prompted criticism on social media, with people questioning what precautions were taken following his release and whether the survivor and her family were informed about his release.
The incident has also renewed questions about the protection available to survivors who come forward and report sexual assault. Critics have questioned how victims can be expected to approach the police and pursue legal action when an accused person, after being released on bail, can return and attack the very person who filed the complaint.
Already, very few survivors come forward to report sexual assault, while legal proceedings can take years. If a survivor faces the risk of being attacked by the accused after filing a complaint, it raises serious concerns about the ability of the legal and justice system to protect those who report such crimes.
The 14-year-old girl survived the attack after a neighbour intervened and helped her. The incident has raised questions about the safety measures in place for survivors and the responsibility of authorities to remain vigilant when accused persons are released on bail.
We hope no survivor has to go through such a situation and that the police remain vigilant in ensuring the safety of victims when accused persons are released.
