Three students (two women and one man) died after a Mini Cooper allegedly traveling at high speed rammed into their scooter near Kochi airport, which is the Kochi airport in Kerala’s Ernakulam district, early Sunday morning after they were riding their way to Kochi airport. The fatal collision happened at Nedumbassery around 2 am. The driver was arrested and police were trying to determine the reason of the crash.
The incident has attracted attention as the driver allegedly told local residents who confronted him that his father would take care of everything. What you heard about that comment adds fuel to the public’s anger over the tragedy, but the exact subject matter and meaning of the exchange are still to be established.
The three victims were Devika, a Wayanad native, Gopika from Palakkad and Ijaz from Karnataka. All of them were working in Thrikkakara at the time they were returning home after tea at a nearby shop when the car hit their two-wheeler.
Local residents rushed the injured students to a hospital, but all three later died. It’s a case that shows again the horror of suspected reckless driving when people are driving at night and early in the morning when the road is quieter.
How The Fatal Accident Occurred Near Kochi Airport
The collision took place at Nedumbassery, near Kochi airport, about 2 am on Sunday. The Mini Cooper was moving at a high speed when it hit the scooter carrying the 3 students, they said.
The impact was said to have left all three riders critically injured. Residents in the area assisted in carrying the victims to the hospital where medical personnel were working to treat them. All three survived.
The students were returning after a short outing to have tea, they said. Their deaths have turned what appeared to be an ordinary late-night journey into a fatal incident that has triggered a police probe and rekindled fears of road safety.
Investigators will need to establish the vehicle’s speed, the sequence of events and any other factors contributing to the collision. Police and forensic police will determine whether this is the case based on what they have found, and in what order in the final analysis they will work.
Driver Taken Into Custody, Police Investigate Possible Intoxication
Suhail Sajeev was taken into custody after the crash and has been booked for culpable homicide and other applicable offences under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), according to the report.
Alcohol or another intoxicating substance may have played a role in the accident, investigators suspect. But intoxication has not been fully established, and investigators are waiting for the results of the driver’s blood tests and other samples.
Police said Suhail was taken for a medical examination after the collision. He said he had drunk alcohol before the crash and, according to investigators, only drunk beer. The test results will determine if he was under the influence of alcohol or another substance at the time of the incident.
Ernakulam Rural Superintendent K S Sudarsan said forensic examination of the car was also being done to find evidence of intoxicating substances. The preliminary investigation suggested possible intoxication but the outcome would be determined through the appropriate tests.
Police have also confirmed that the Mini Cooper was registered in Suhail's father's name and that Suhail held a valid driving licence. Vehicle ownership and possession of a valid licence, however, do not determine whether a driver was operating a vehicle safely at the time of a crash.
‘Father Will Take Care Of Everything’: Alleged Remark Draws Attention
The driver's alleged comment has become one of the most widely discussed aspects of the incident. Suhail told local residents who confronted him after the collision that his father would take care of everything, the report said.
The remark came just hours after a crash in which three young people died. It has raised questions of accountability and whether the investigation will be based on the evidence or the vehicle’s ownership or the driver’s family background.
But the alleged statement should be treated as a reported statement not an independently established fact. The investigation of the accident and driver's behaviour and possible intoxication is separate from assumptions about what the remark may imply.
A big question for the investigators is to know where the crash originated and whether any offences happened. What evidence police, forensic experts and medical authorities will acquire will help determine the next steps in the case.
Friends Of The Victims Allegedly Assault Driver At Hospital
The incident also led to a separate episode of alleged violence when some friends of the victims confronted Suhail at the hospital where he had been taken for medical examination.
Police said the group assaulted him inside the hospital. The situation was further aggravated when he was taken outside, as one man allegedly hit him in the head from behind.
Police intervened to prevent further violence and took one of the alleged assailants into custody. The assault is being treated as a separate matter from the original road accident, said the police.
The three students’ deaths have understandably caused distress to those connected to them. But police need to investigate both the fatal collision and the alleged hospital assault through legal means to help. Violence against a person in custody or under police supervision can create additional legal and safety concerns without resolving the circumstances of the original crash.

Investigation Continues Into The Deaths Of Three Students
The immediate focus in this case will be to determine the cause of the collision, to obtain the pending test results and to obtain evidence of forensic evidence. Police will need to evaluate the driver’s actions before and after the crash and determine what legal implications may be issued based on the evidence.
They have a good example of the effect dangerous driving can have for passengers, pedestrians and people riding two wheelers. Speed, impaired driving and bad judgment can be lethal and the impact of a fatal collision is felt by the people in the vehicle as well as the people who survive it.
Devika, Gopika and Ijaz’s families and friends’ loss of three young lives is the most devastating consequence of the incident. The results of the investigation will be crucial in establishing responsibility and making sure that the case is handled through the legal process.
