According to Malayalam news agencies, police intervened to control the situation, and the college management took disciplinary action against the students involved in the clash, according to Malayalam news reports.

Instagram dispute reportedly sets off clash

The dispute was said to start over an Instagram post or page, though the content that set off the dispute has not been made public.

A similar clash had occurred on Friday, October 9, Manorama News reported. After a two-day break, students returned to college on Monday, when tensions erupted into another clash.

The disagreement turned into a physical fight between senior and junior students, the newspaper reported. Videos circulating on social media showed students stopping and assaulting others who were travelling on a scooter.

The timing of events and the identities of everyone involved have not been established independently.

Violence spreads beyond the college campus.

The confrontation also spread outside the college premises to areas like Thuneri Pattani as well as the vicinity of Nadapuram Government Hospital.

Some students sustained injuries during the violence and went to the hospital to receive medical treatment at local health facilities, news sites in Malayalam media reported.

Police officers arrived on the scene after receiving information about the confrontation. Officers used batons to disperse the students and control the situation, the report said.

Students and parents were concerned when videos of the incident circulated online.

College suspends 22 students

In a report published on October 13, Malayala Manorama reported that the college had suspended 22 students in connection with the incident.

The suspended students included 16 third-year students and six first-year students. The college management said disciplinary action was taking place after the confrontation.

The report also stated that police had registered a case against six unidentified students in connection with an alleged assault on a first-year student. The investigation and any further legal action will determine individual responsibility.

These developments are a large escalation from the first reports on October 12, which stated that no formal complaint had yet been received.

Campus safety and student discipline at a glance

The incident has increased attention on student disputes and campus discipline and educational institutions’ responsibility for maintaining a safe learning environment.

Social media disputes are frequently publicized and can even be explosive—online arguments turn into face-to-face confrontations. However, the reported Instagram argument is still an early case and needs to be investigated.

Colleges should deal with student conflict through disciplinary processes and grievance structures, not just physical violence. Police investigations and legal consequences can be drawn out and determined depending on the evidence and the offences committed.

What's next?

The college's disciplinary action and the police investigation are the first steps towards accountability. Further official statements will be needed to determine when the dispute started, how many people were injured, and if there will be more action to be taken.

For now, that clash at MET College in Kallachi is a reminder that disagreements must be resolved without violence. And while we will never go back to the situation because this time we do not have a chance, we will do the right thing and investigate and get the students to be safe if we can.
