Many people prefer late‑night snacks, but some foods have harmful effects on your digestion, sleep and health. At nighttime, your body’s metabolism slows, rendering it a bit more difficult to digest heavy, sugary or stimulating foods. Eating the wrong foods before bed can cause acid reflux, weight gain and a restless night's sleep, too. Avoid eating these seven foods at night.

1. Spicy Foods

Spicy foods may taste delicious, but they can cause heartburn and acid reflux after people eat them before bed. The spices can raise stomach acid and irritate the digestive system, making sleep more difficult.

2. Fried and Fatty Foods

Fried foods such as samosas, pakoras and fries are full of oil and fat. They slow digestion, which can lead to bloating and discomfort while sleeping.

3. Sugary Desserts

At night, eating sweets (e.g., cakes, chocolate, or traditional desserts) triggers spikes in blood sugar levels followed by crashes in energy. These ups and downs may throw off your sleeping pattern and cause you to have restless nights.

4. Caffeinated Drinks

Coffee, tea, cola and such energy beverages contain caffeine, a stimulant that can keep one's brain alert for several hours. Drinking caffeine late in the night can create difficulty falling asleep.

5. Heavy Meat Dishes

Red meat and heavy meat dishes rich in protein and fat require longer to digest. Eating it at night can cause indigestion and disturbed sleep.
