The much-awaited Kambala Calendar 2026-27 has been unveiled, and is a very welcome addition to the celebrations of thousands of Kambala lovers in Coastal Karnataka and around the world. The calendar is based on the theme of our culture, “Our Culture. Our Pride.” It comprises the complete schedule of the traditional buffalo racing season from November 2026 to April 2027.
Kambala’s cultural identity, agricultural heritage, and community spirit are among the oldest and most cherished traditions of Tulunadu; Kambala is far more than just a sports event, but also the cultural heritage, agricultural heritage, and community spirit of coastal Karnataka. Every year, thousands of spectators come to watch pairs of powerful buffaloes sprint through muddy paddy fields while skilled jockeys guide them in a spectacular display of speed, strength, and tradition.
Organisers are looking forward to very large crowds in many of the historic Kambala venues in Dakshina Kannada, Udupi, and the surrounding areas.
A Tradition From Agriculture.
Kambala dates back centuries, and it is very much tied to the agricultural traditions of Tulunadu. It has been held after the paddy harvest and was organised to express gratitude to local deities for a good farming season and to pray for the future.
Kambala has evolved into a major cultural festival that draws visitors from across India and abroad. The event has been modernized but is still very much a spiritual and traditional event.
Today, Kambala competitions are based on advanced technology and laser timing systems and photo finish cameras to make the competition much more transparent and accurate, to be able to determine winners and to ensure the authenticity of the sport.

Kambala's Growing Popularity
Kambala has expanded well beyond coastal Karnataka in recent years. There are events like Bengaluru Kambala in the city’s Palace Grounds, which have brought the centuries-old tradition to urban audiences and created interest internationally.
The speed of the buffaloes, the expertise of the jockeys and owners who spend months training and caring for their animals have transformed Kambala into one of India's most unique traditional sports venues.
Local professional jockeys have become local celebrities, and buffaloes receive specialized nutrition, veterinary care, and rigorous training throughout the year to prepare them for the competitive season.
Preserving a Cultural Legacy
Kambala is still very much a symbol of agriculture, faith, and community in Tulunadu. Modern technology has certainly improved the management of the competitions, but the essence of the festival remains the same: tradition, heritage, and a sense of community.
With the 2026-27 calendar now set to take shape, we are looking forward to another unforgettable season of thrilling races, feasting and celebrations, and cultural pride, which will be a celebration of Coastal Karnataka’s spirit.
