In 2025, Paush Amavasya holds a unique spiritual weight as it is the last Amavasya of the year. Falling in the cold month of Paush, it is traditionally known as "Chhota Pitru Paksha"—a day exclusively dedicated to the peace of ancestors and the resolution of karmic debts.
While the Tithi (lunar day) spans across two calendar dates, the religious observances and fasts are scheduled based on the Udaya Tithi (the Tithi prevailing at sunrise). Therefore, Paush Amavasya will be observed on Friday, December 19, 2025.
- Amavasya Tithi Begins: 04:59 AM on December 19, 2025
- Amavasya Tithi Ends: 07:12 AM on December 20, 2025

Significance of Paush Amavasya
This day is deeply significant for three primary reasons:
- Ancestral Peace (Pitru Karma): It is believed that ancestors visit the earthly realm on this day. Sincere offerings like Tarpan and Pind Daan help them attain salvation (Moksha) and, in return, they bless the family with stability.
- Removal of Doshas: Astrologically, this is the most powerful day to perform remedies for Pitru Dosha and Kaal Sarp Dosha in one's horoscope.
- The Lakshmi Connection: In 2025, the Amavasya falls on a Friday. Friday is the day of Goddess Lakshmi, making it an exceptional time for rituals related to financial growth and household abundance.
Worship Method and Rituals
Holy Bath: If possible, bathe in a sacred river. At home, you can add a few drops of Ganga Jal to your bathwater before sunrise.
- Surya Arghya: Offer water to the Sun God (Surya Dev) using a copper vessel. Since Paush is the month of the Sun, this act brings health and vitality.
- Ancestor Worship: Face the South direction and offer water mixed with black sesame seeds (Til) to your forefathers while chanting “Om Pitridevaya Namah.”
- Acts of Daan (Charity): In this cold season, donating woolen blankets, warm clothes, black sesame, and food grains is considered highly meritorious.
- Evening Lamp: Light a mustard oil lamp under a Peepal tree or at your home entrance in the name of your ancestors to dispel darkness and negativity.
