Remembering SPB: The Legendary Singer Whose Voice Continues to Inspire Millions

S. P. Balasubrahmanyam was born on June 4, 1946, at Nellore, Andhra Pradesh and emerged as one of the greatest playback singers in Indian music history. His magical voice ruled Indian cinema for over five decades and is still heard on YouTube and Google searches and on social media even after he’s gone.

He was born in a traditional Telugu family and grew up in the love of music; his father was a great Harikatha artist, and from childhood, he was interested in singing. Balasubrahmanyam was actually interested in engineering, but destiny directed him towards music.

He came to film industry fame after winning a singing competition and got into the film industry when he won a singing competition. In 1966, SPB made his first playback singing debut in the Telugu film industry and rapidly became famous for his songwriting and emotional ability as he appeared in Tamil, Kannada, Malayalam, and Hindi films.

SPB has sung many great songs for the likes of Rajinikanth, Kamal Haasan, Salman Khan, Chiranjeevi and many others in great films. From Sagara Sangamam, Ek Duuje Ke Liye, Maine Pyar Kiya, and Roja, he is the perfect voice that is loved by generations. SPB has recorded over 40,000 songs in multiple Indian languages (around 100 National Awards and a lot of international recognition) and worked in the industry. 

His emotional singing style made people feel every word and emotion in his voice. And despite his huge popularity, SPB had a lot of problems in life - work struggles, industry competition, and illness. But he was humble and dedicated and respected by fans and fellow artists.

SPB married Savitri Balasubrahmanyam, and his family was his life. As a singer, he also sang in the theatre, dubbed, hosted TV shows, and played in concerts worldwide. Even after SPB died in 2020, his voice remains immortal. His songs are still touching millions of people, and younger singers look up to him as their biggest influence. S. P.
