Thanks to its simplicity and reflection, Vaishakh Amavasya is one of the days with great spiritual meaning in the devotional Hindu calendar. But this may soon lead to confusion in 2026 as to whether this observance is on April 16 or April 17.
Vaishakh Amavasya is dated April 17 as per traditional calculation, which holds that it takes place on April 17, 2026. The Amavasya tithi officially begins on April 16 at 8:11 pm and ends on April 17 at 5:21 pm as per Hindu Panchang, Hindu calendar. As Hindu rites do not begin until sunrise, the day of observance of the Amavasya tithi will be April 17 (the start of the Amavasya tithi. This day is crucial in the ceremonial process of ancestral mourning, purification, and charity. It is believed that taking these measures today can bring peace to the souls of ancestors and also dispel harmful karma.
The time traditionally best for carrying out rituals is early in the morning; therefore, preferably early morning hours are the best times. Brahma Muhurat daily from 4:25 am to 5:09 am is a good time of day for bathing and purifying oneself.
This time is also ideal for meditating. Sunrise is at 5:54 am, and worship will start from 5:54 am. The second auspicious time is the Abhijit Muhurat, which takes place from 11:55 am to 12:47 pm and is better for puja and good works.
Usually, worshippers begin their day with a holy bath on Vaishakh Amavasya before devotional practice. Many prefer to dip in sacred rivers, and a few drops of Ganga water are added to the bath at home. One common practice is offering water to the sun (Surya Arghya) in a copper vessel. Tarpan prayers to ancestors is another highlight of the day, and is said to bless spirits and reduce Pitru dosh.
Donating food, clothing, and essential items to the needy, viewed as charitable acts, receives a lot of emphasis. It is also advised not to start new businesses or buy luxury goods on this day, as this time is for meditation, praying, and generosity. Vaishakh Amavasya is to pause and reflect and re-structure one’s spiritual value system. To observe it sincerely and mindfully is perceived to bring inner peace and good energy.
