Rajkumar’s memorial at Basaveshwaranagar. His remarks have sparked angry reactions from fans, political observers, and members of the general public, and a formal complaint was filed against him at the Basaveshwaranagar Police Station.
The controversy stemmed after Chetan tweeted, questioning the allocation of approximately 2.5 acres of prime land for Dr Rajkumar's memorial complex to be near the city centre. By saying that he respects Rajkumar as a great artist, Chetan queried whether such a massive public land allocation was justified, in a city where land and the distribution of it is scarce and hotly contested.
As Chetan said in his statement, there should be no counting of land allocations based on the electoral results or the “vote bank politics.” He said the decisions should thus be made for long-term vision and public utility. Pointing to a broader issue, he suggested that land in 21st-century India had turned into an indispensable, and sometimes contentious, resource and that many different players competed for scarce land.

But the comments did not sit well with many people in the public space, especially supporters of one Dr Rajkumar, whose cultural stature is very high in Karnataka. Huge swathes of the general public shared it on social media, claiming Chetan is deriding someone who has given so much to the Kannada language, culture and cinema.
“I’m not saying I do not love Rajkumar,” he said, to fans from across the country who see him as an actor as well as a figure of Kannada pride and a touchstone of their culture, their identity for their audiences. Some critics similarly knocked Chetan for his point that they believe great leaders like Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi have had memorials constructed in vast areas at prime sites for decades on immense land.
Memorials of revered leaders were a long tradition in India, they said, and should not be selectively scrutinised. The backlash was so fierce that Basaveshwaranagar Police Station claimed Chetan had hurt sentiments and made a complaint against him. It is pending investigation; however, no severe lawsuit has been filed.
The issue has sparked a more general political and social debate as well. And for those not quite sympathetic to Chetan’s call for a more reasonable and utility-oriented landholding, there are those for whom icons like Dr Rajkumar are worthy of keeping, and the people they helped to sustain are to enjoy their continuing memory.
The episode reflects, once more, the fine line between free speech and public sentiment, even sentiment that involves the public. If that discussion persists within a range of social and political contexts, this is merely one episode in a broader cultural debate about how societies select their traditional heroes and how to allocate the public resources to them.
