And with this unprecedented occasion, as in the great leap forward for stage entertainment for this city, the largest Broadway production has already taken over this iconic arena stage, and it could be a year-long time before all theatres in downtown Dubai will step up to the plate for their current show that has no hope of coming up any time soon.

The world’s most popular musical is scheduled to play over the course of eight performances for five days from Dec. 16 to 20, and theatre lovers in Dubai are wowed by one of entertainment’s biggest besties and the longest-running musicals in years.

All in all, Chicago is a wonderful theatrical thrill in its own right, as well as a little serious criticism, a little sensational music, a taste for a little serious criticism, nice looks-and-fame shots, some dark humour, as well as some touching choreography in black comedy, but also stage work.

It goes on into fame-mongering fanfare, media manipulation, representation and notoriety-making, celebrity-fame obsession and public scandal, yet these very topical themes are still surprisingly pertinent to the present day. The story is driven primarily by the story of two ambitious women, each of whom is caught up in their own life after serving time in jail, tied up in their own life to a story that will, if you pay attention, still feel very relevant.

At the heart of it are two ambitious women. Roxie Hart is a nightclub dancer yearning for fame. Instead of covering up, Roxie tries to exploit the scandal in her path to stardom. In the audience, there’s Velma Kelly, a successful vaudeville star, one who knows how to turn crime into celebrity on just such a spectacular level. The two women do rather than become mired in the courts, they compete for media coverage, public sympathy and press notice in newspapers.

Through manipulation, charisma and performance, they attempt to control the narrative of their crimes in a sensationally charged world in 1920s Chicago. It is with a soundtrack that has been an adored one at such an epic scale as all those tunes: All That Jazz, Cell Block Tango, Razzle Dazzle.

Until now, these numbers were mythical and have still served to hold audiences riveted to the page decades after its world-famous opening. And fans of the Academy Award-winning screen adaptation (Catherine Zeta-Jones, Renée Zellweger, Richard Gere) are especially stoked that the stage show has landed in Dubai.

And the live musical, for a lot of people (at least in the West), is a way to return and enjoy the magic in an alternate media space that feels just as “magical” as the film, to be able to experience that energy and intensity in that moment, in real time. For new arrivals to Chicago, which welcomes Broadway musicals, the performance will be a perfect experience.

Chicago has multiple Tony Awards to its name for musicals, and in terms of both Broadway and West End running, the series is best known for the beautiful-looking production, well-executed choreography, and sardonic (albeit not entirely gory) jokes. As the city solidifies the reputation of Dubai as a global destination for concerts, live events and theatre, audiences of entertainment are raving about the news.

Another significant development for Dubai’s entertainment industry is bringing a Broadway giant like Chicago on stage at Coca-Cola Arena. Many concerts will have their audiences streaming through the official Coca-Cola Arena front door in quest of tickets for a buzzy event, and tickets for the gigs are also available.

For the Broadway fan, or simply a concertgoer, Chicago has an experience of theatre to forget and is packed with style, scandal and all that jazz.
