The veteran actor, screenwriter, and director breathed his last at the Tripunithura Taluk Hospital in Kochi. Reports indicate that Sreenivasan had been battling prolonged health issues, including cardiac and kidney-related ailments. His condition reportedly deteriorated while he was being transported for dialysis, leading to his untimely demise.

The Voice of the Common Man

Born in 1956 in Kannur, Sreenivasan’s career spanned nearly five decades, during which he redefined Malayalam cinema with his sharp wit, biting social satire, and deeply human storytelling. Unlike the larger-than-life heroes of the era, Sreenivasan became the face of the "common man," often portraying characters burdened by middle-class struggles, unemployment, and social hypocrisy.

He is credited with acting in over 225 films and penning some of the most iconic screenplays in the history of Indian cinema, including:

  • Sandesam (1991): A legendary political satire that remains relevant today.
  • Nadodikkattu (1987): The cult classic that gave birth to the beloved duo of Dasan and Vijayan (Mohanlal and Sreenivasan).
  • Katha Parayumpol (2007): A touching tale of friendship that was later remade in several languages, including Hindi as Billu.

A Multi-Faceted Genius

Sreenivasan was not just an actor and writer; he was a National Award-winning director. His directorial debut, Chinthavishtayaya Shyamala (1998), won the National Film Award for Best Film on Other Social Issues, while Vadakkunokkiyanthram (1989) is still celebrated as a masterclass in psychological comedy.

His collaborations with directors like Sathyan Anthikad and Priyadarshan are considered the "Golden Age" of Malayalam cinema, blending humor with poignant social commentary.

Industry in Grief

As news of his passing spread, tributes poured in from across the country. Superstar Mohanlal, his long-time on-screen partner, expressed profound grief, while younger stars like Prithviraj Sukumaran hailed him as "one of the greatest writers/actors ever."

Sreenivasan is survived by his wife, Vimala, and his two sons, Vineeth Sreenivasan and Dhyan Sreenivasan, both of whom have followed in their father’s footsteps as successful filmmakers and actors.
