"A rock and roll legend, an inspiration to millions, but, most importantly… an amazing individual who will be deeply missed." From Brooklyn to the Brill Building. Sedaka, who was born on March 13, 1939, in Brooklyn, was a child prodigy with talented musicians and became a scholarship student at Juilliard.

But his heart was in the nascent sound of rock and roll. He notably teamed with his high school neighbor, Howard Greenfield, at the venerable Brill Building, where he created hits that emerged as the soundtrack for a generation. Long before he turned a solo star, Sedaka was a songwriter for the greats who created "Stupid Cupid" for Connie Francis.

As an artist, he ruled the early 60s with genre-defining numbers like "Oh! Carol" (for his classmate Carole King), "Calendar Girl" and the classic "Breaking Up Is Hard to Do."

The Great 1970s Reinvention

When most of his peers faded during the British Invasion, Sedaka made what would be one of the most successful comebacks in music history in the 1970s. Following his arrival in the UK, he associated with Elton John who would sign him to Rocket Records. During this period came the No. 1 hit "Laughter in the Rain," with its soaring chorus, and the gritty Elton-backed "Bad Blood."

Sedaka also was notable for rewriting his own history. He re-recorded "Breaking Up Is Hard to Do" as a slow, soulful ballad in 1975 to show that a great song could live in many lives.

A Lasting Legacy

Sedaka’s reach moved far beyond his own voice. His works notably "Love Will Keep Us Together" (greatly popularized by Captain & Tennille) and "Solitaire" demonstrated a sophisticated grasp of harmony and structure that not many pop writers could achieve. Even in his old age, Sedaka was a tireless entertainer and social media presence of sorts. Throughout his life, he took out "mini-concerts" from his piano in his house to comfort homebound fans.

He is still survived by a partner that lasted 64 years, Leba, who is married to him; and their two children Marc and Dara. Upon his death, while he was still an important face of hit music it is thought that his music is not only remembered as this kind because he was a great "songwriter’s songwriter" never deprived himself of this love for an elegant melody.
