The Madras High Court has set up the case for Gautham Vasudev Menon to pay ₹4.25 crore. To prove his case (as per the court order) to R.S. Infotainment and his film Photon Factory and the documentary producer and creative executive, the Court has ordered that Gautham Vasudev Menon pay ₹4.25 crore in this incident and also pays 12% in a per annum interest.
To put our point in historical perspective, for all movie sales that come later, the documentary does not need the help of a public relations chief of this country, because its content (such as the preproduction, editing and final printing) must always be shot by Gautham Vasudev Menon. Infotainment, a production company with S. Elred Kumar. The case centers mainly on a film project that never came into execution.
In November, 2010, Menon’s company agreed with R.S. Infotainment and Escape Artists Motion Pictures to make a film referred to as Production No. 6. The project was never finished, however. By 2013, R.S. Infotainment filed suit (see Section 6.13 on a notice of claim of breach of contract & financial loss file).
A single judge had earlier ruled for the production company and ordered Menon to pay that amount. Menon appealed this decision but a division bench of Justices P. Velmurugan and K. Govindarajan Thilakav upheld the same decision on March 23, 2026. The court made it clear that Menon would have to pay ₹4.25 crore plus interest calculated from May 2010 in order to cover that liability even so it would have been far greater in dollars and dollars from previous years.
The verdict is a significant blow to Menon. The money, especially with interest he has accrued with that over 15 years, will be much higher for a filmmaker whose work on creative projects and production ventures have already come together. It is also worrying to the bankers and collaborators, there’s a risk that they will be unwilling to invest in projects that have already been put across the map and are not settled, and will continue to get there.
Gautham Vasudev Menon is another well-known director. He has won many awards including two National Film Awards including Minnale, Kaakha Kaakha, Vaaranam Aayiram, Vinnaithaandi Varuvaayaa & Yennai Arindhaal across Tamil, Telugu and Hindi films.
And the court’s ruling will help settle a long standing dispute forever. In the film industry, while Menon is admired for his creative contributions the verdict shows you the importance of honoring your contractual commitment. He may now think of leaving there’s something much like filmmaking work to do and to address this financial problem but he is still a good director so audiences will just keep coming for him.
