When people hear the name Mano Murthy, they often remember his soulful Kannada film music, particularly the unforgettable soundtrack of Mungaru Male. But what most people don’t know is that Mano Murthy had an incredible career before he became a composer, spanning technology and entrepreneurship. From Silicon Valley to the Kannada film industry, his path is one of talent, adaptability, and success.
Mano Murthy took his first job as a programmer at Microsoft. With a strong engineering background, he soon moved into entrepreneurship. He co-founded three California-based tech companies. His greatest venture was Allegro Systems, an IP security provider. Allegro Systems was later acquired by Cisco Systems, a purchase worth millions. From those successes, he became one of the most successful Indian entrepreneurs in the United States.
Mano Murthy graduated from UVCE (University Visvesvaraya College of Engineering) in Bengaluru. His curriculum in engineering prepared him extensively in both programming and entrepreneurship. And though he enjoyed success abroad, he remained attuned to his origins and Kannada culture.
During his time in America, Mano Murthy’s music was first appreciated during Kannada community functions. Music would serve as a backdrop to events held by US-based Kannada associations, and many audiences encountered his compositions in gatherings. This passion took him back to India, where he joined the Kannada film scene as a composer.
Mano Murthy’s breakthrough film was Mungaru Male (2006), whose soundtrack became a phenomenon in Karnataka. Songs like “Anisuthide” are still best-remembered classics. He could marry emotion with melody, and was one of Kannada cinema's most lauded music directors.
The story of Mano Murthy is unique for it links two worlds, technology and music. Building companies in Silicon Valley while composing timeless songs in Karnataka, he proves he is not limited to the purely intellectual. He is not only a Kannada music director but also a successful entrepreneur whose life inspires aspiring musicians and budding entrepreneurs.
