Mia Khalifa, a former adult film star turned sports commentator and social media influencer, broke down in tears on social media today in a harrowing plea to the world in the wake of Israel’s massive military offensive on her homeland, Lebanon. The Lebanese-American star, a vocal proponent of Middle Eastern causes for decades, characterizes the current escalation as a "genocide" taking place in the pretext of a fragile regional ceasefire.
A Heartbreaking Viral Appeal
Khalifa was seen, in a highly tear-jerking video she posted to her millions of followers on Instagram, visibly distraught and trying to find words to address the destruction in Beirut and southern Lebanon. “This is a very painful day. What we are seeing on social media is something we haven’t seen in years. This is genocide,” she cried out. “In the span of 10 minutes, 160 airstrikes came down on Lebanon. They are pounding schools and hospitals and residential areas, even cemeteries all during an alleged ceasefire.”
"My Taxes are Destroying My Homeland"
Khalifa, who lives in the United States, expressed feeling deeply a sense of being helpless and angry at the government of the United States with military aid to Israel. She mourned that her tax payments were actually funding the destruction of her country. "I don't know how to respond anymore. I don't have the words," she told her.
"For a long, long time I shared people's feelings that I concurred with, although now I have to speak for myself. My tax money is being used to destroy my motherland. It’s nothing short of a nightmare you can’t wake up from."
A Critique of Modern Civilization
The influencer also threw a punch at the irony of global technological advances being waged at the expense of regional warfare. She also wondered the morality of a world that turns to space while failing to safeguard life on Earth. "What is happening? So send men to Mars to look for signs of life, and we kill it on Earth. This is pure barbarism,” Khalifa declared. The world has been complicit in witnessing its own atrocities and in trying to understand when the cycle of violence might finally come to an end, she said.
Context of the Lebanon Strikes
Khalifa’s flare-up comes after a “surprise strike” was carried out by the Israeli military on Wednesday and Thursday. Lebanon's Civil Defence said over 1,160 were wounded and 254 people killed in another day of bombardment. Although the Israeli government says it is striking Hezbollah infrastructure to "change the reality" and shield its northern inhabitants, the numbers of civilian casualties draw global anger.
Mia Khalifa retired from the adult industry years ago, but despite that, she is among the most influential figures on the internet. Since transitioning toward sports commentary and webcam modeling, she’s maintained a meteoric rise in popularity, and her reach is now using that visibility to raise people’s awareness about the humanitarian crisis in the Levant.
