Bollywood actor Ranveer Singh has sued the Federation of Western India Cine Employees (FWICE) for not cooperating with the movie after the movie Don 3’s problems.
According to reports, the actor has approached the court seeking relief against the directive and thinks that it can affect his career and future projects. This is a step forward in the dispute that has sparked a lot of debate in the Hindi film industry.
The conflict was probably caused by the production and casting of Don 3, the next in Farhan Akhtar's action-thriller series. Ranveer Singh has been cast as the lead actor in the remake of the series, replacing Shah Rukh Khan who played Shah Rukh Khan.
When the project was announced, there was strong interest from fans and industry experts. But production schedules, contractual obligations, and industry regulation created friction between stakeholders and FWICE to intervene in the end, it said.
FWICE, one of the most influential workers' federations in the Indian entertainment industry, was said to have sent a non-cooperation order to members not to work with the actor until the situation was resolved. There are consequences for film production for a studio (and the crew, technicians, and other professionals in the industry).
Ranveer Singh has been in court to object to the order and has been told he can't comply with the order, sources said.
Neither Ranveer Singh nor FWICE has made such a public statement on the new legal developments. But industry insiders say the case has set a precedent that could affect the power of both industry bodies and the rights of actors and producers in disputes over film projects.
The legal battle also comes at an important time for Don 3, Bollywood’s next big movie with a far-reaching new star (Farhan Akhtar). An entirely new franchise with a new story and a new leading actor will be told in the next few years. The entire film’s production timeline has to be closely watched by fans who are also worried about whether there is a long-running dispute.
As the case goes through the legal system, all eyes are on the court and the responses of FWICE and the makers of Don 3. It could have repercussions for industry relations and professional associations in Indian cinema in general.
