The much-awaited film Jana Nayagan, starring Vijay, has once again faced a delay, this time due to political developments and the enforcement of the Model Code of Conduct ahead of the 2026 Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly election.
The movie was originally scheduled to release on January 9, but the release was stalled after the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) reportedly delayed granting the certification required for theatrical release.
Certification Delay and Legal Battle
Due to the delay in obtaining certification, the film’s production company KVN Productions approached the court seeking relief. However, the court proceedings were also delayed, which pushed the film’s release further.
Later, the producers decided to withdraw the case and attempt to secure the certificate directly from the CBFC. Despite this move, the certification process again faced delays, raising speculation that the hold-up may be politically motivated.
Election Code Blocks Release
Meanwhile, the Election Commission announced the Tamil Nadu Assembly election schedule on March 15, triggering the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) across the state.
Under MCC rules, films that promote a political party, influence voters, or criticise rival political groups cannot be released during the election period. Since Vijay is entering politics and contesting the elections, the film’s release during this time has become nearly impossible.
Political Content in the Film
Although Jana Nayagan is reportedly a remake of the Telugu film Bhagavanth Kesari, sources claim the Tamil version includes scenes that criticise certain political parties and dialogues that appear to support Vijay’s political ideology.
This content is believed to be one of the reasons why certification faced hurdles earlier.
Election Timeline
Voting for the Tamil Nadu Assembly election is scheduled to take place in a single phase on April 23, 2026, with the results to be declared on May 4, 2026.
Since the MCC will remain in effect until the election process is completed, industry sources believe the film is now likely to release only after the results are announced, possibly in May 2026.
Political Impact
The delay is seen as a significant political setback for Vijay, who recently launched his political party Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam and plans to field candidates across all constituencies in the state.
Reports suggest that Vijay himself may contest from two constituencies, intensifying the political stakes. With the film unable to release before the elections, analysts say his political rivals may have gained an advantage by preventing the movie from influencing voters ahead of the polls.
