The Allu Arjun Protocol: Inside the ‘42 Rules’ Controversy - Why Can’t You Look Him in the Eye?

There’s no shortage of catchy headlines about "Icon star" Allu Arjun, but he didn’t just go viral recently because of a box office hit. Instead, it is a leaked list of 42 very strict guidelines that was apparently given to media professionals and executives before meeting him.

The list, which has already sparked explosive discussion on Reddit and X (formerly Twitter), describes a highly controlled environment that seems more like a diplomatic summit than a press conference. As a general rule, there’s no eye contact, which is at the center of this debate: “Why can't someone look you in the eyes, bro?” users have asked.

Is he a god or Medusa?

  • Physical distance: There are no handshakes or touch unless requested by the actor.
  • No Spontaneity: We are allegedly told exactly what questions to ask, with failure to comply resulting in the interview being cut short. The Silent Method: Staff members are instructed to hardly talk and minimize their movements when the star is in the room.

What is the "No Eye Contact" Rule, then, designed to achieve?

Indeed, the no eye contact rules in celebrity management well known to have been associated with Tom Cruise or Ellen DeGeneres in the past are sometimes described as a means of keeping the actor centered or reducing the sense of being “on” at all times. But Indians who say stars are “Prekshaka Devullu” or Audience Gods tend to view such rules through the lens of their own era, as a sign of a single, insatiable ego or a detachment from the ordinary person.

Ego or Security?

The timing of such leaks is particularly sensitive. After being briefly detained and bailed following a stampede at the Sandhya Theatre during the late 2024 Pushpa 2 premiere, his team has reportedly become "hyper-vigilant" about his public persona and physical presence. Supporters of the rules argue that it was created by an international PR agency in a high-tech context for his own image as “Icon Star,” not under personal guidance from Allu Arjun himself.

The "Jhukega Nahi" Irony Critics say he is telling the world the way the world needs to hear him as a 42-point manual, and that he has become the type of man who the public now sees as the leader. Whether or not these rules are a valid professional expectation or just “superstar delusions” they have added extra complexity to Allu Arjun’s public persona in the lead-up to his next big collaboration with director Atlee.
