Mumbai Weather Update: Colaba Records 37.5°C, AQI Stands at 99

Mumbai had a period of extreme heat in which the day temperature had soared above 37°C at its two key weather observatories Colaba and Santacruz. Colaba was 37.5°C and Santacruz 37.2°C for October 22, 2026 according to India Meteorological Department (IMD) data.

The readings were above the seasonal average at both sites, highlighting the unusually warm conditions across the city. Mumbai’s citywide air quality index (AQI) was 99 and also in the satisfactory category according to India’s national air quality classification.

Mumbai’s high daytime temperatures and air quality issues are also driving the weather in the city and its suburbs.

Mumbai Temperature Update: Colaba Records 37.5°C

Colaba recorded a maximum temperature of 37.5°C, 4°C above the average temperature for this time of year. Santacruz recorded 37.2°C, 3.2°C above its seasonal average.

The readings indicate that South Mumbai and the suburban belt are experiencing temperatures well above average. The difference between the temperature and seasonal average is stark, especially at the time residents would expect the weather to be more peaceful after the monsoon.

The night temperatures also remained fairly warm. The minimum temperature in Colaba was 27.8°C and in Santacruz was 25.7°C according to the IMD observations for October 22.

Warm nights can be less relieving after a hot day, even in densely built-up neighborhoods where buildings and roads are still hot. Humidity can also make conditions feel more uncomfortable than the recorded temperature alone indicates.

Mumbai AQI at 99: What Does It Mean?

Mumbai’s citywide AQI was 99. According to India’s National Air Quality Index, readings between 51 and 100 fall in the satisfactory category.

An AQI of 99 is at the top end of this range, but it does not mean air pollution is absent. The air quality can vary from neighbourhood to neighbourhood due to traffic, construction activity, local emissions, weather and pollution.

It is more important to take the citywide average and the readings at individual monitoring stations into account. Some areas might have higher pollution levels and the air pollution in those areas should be taken into account by people familiar with local readings and official advisories.

The AQI is calculated according to the concentrations of pollutants. The overall category reflects the pollutant measurements and does not mean that all pollutant levels are the same in every city.

How Heat and Air Quality affect the residents.

Hot weather increases the risk of dehydration, fatigue, and other heat-related factors in older people, children, outdoor workers and people with preexisting health problems.

Residents should take a few very basic precautions during high temperatures:

  • Drink water regularly throughout the day.
  • In fact, during the hottest hours of the day to limit strenuous outdoor activity.
  • Wear lightweight, breathable clothing and seek shade when out in the open.
  • Before planning prolonged outdoor activities, check official weather alerts and local air quality readings.
  • If symptoms such as dizziness, confusion or fainting occur, seek medical attention.

People with asthma or other respiratory problems should follow the advice of their clinician and monitor air quality and follow up with their clinician to help them if pollution levels develop, especially if local air quality increases.

What to expect from Mumbai Weather?

The latest temperatures confirm that Mumbai was experiencing above-normal heat at Colaba and Santacruz. But one day’s observations are not evidence of how long the spell will be.

Residents should check the latest IMD forecast for expected maximum and minimum temperatures, humidity, rainfall prospects and any heat or hot-and-humid weather advisories. Conditions may vary across the city and surrounding districts.

Air quality data from official monitoring platforms can help residents to know if pollution levels are improving or worsening in their neighborhoods.

Mumbai’s recent weather observations underscore the importance of monitoring both temperature and air quality. Although the AQI of 99 is in the satisfactory category, temperatures above 37°C in the morning and evening are the key to keeping hydration and shade and sensible outdoor planning in mind.
