Students in Kodagu district have got big news ahead of the end of the district’s grand Dasara celebrations. Deputy Commissioner Someshkar has issued an official order declaring a holiday for schools in the district tomorrow, after the celebrations in Madikeri and Gonikoppal.
The decision was taken as a precautionary measure, given the huge number of people who are expected to attend the historic Dasara celebrations and the risk of disruption to public transportation the following day. The holiday is also to prevent students from far-away villages and other areas from going to school. With thousands of people expected to participate in the celebrations, the district administration has taken into account students' convenience and safety while making arrangements for the day after the celebrations.
The popular Madikeri Dasara and Gonikoppal Dasara celebrations are expected to be very lively and will attract residents, visitors and devotees from different parts of the district and beyond. The celebrations are famous for their cultural significance, traditional processions and passionate public participation.
In Madikeri and Gonikoppal, the celebrations become a huge highlight for the Dashamantapas procession at night and then go on until the early morning hours. Thousands of people are expected to come to the procession route to see the festivity and traditional events in the area and to see the beautiful displays and to see the old celebrations. The flow of people and vehicles will continue to be heavy in various places even after the main event is over because of the scale of the festivities.
If transport services are not available and bus services have not been used for a long time, the school system is worried that private bus services will be disrupted in the early hours of the day when students arrive at school; private bus lines could not go to schools and students would be stuck in the back office, and parents would not know whether they would be able to take the bus that morning. The decision to cancel school as a holiday is therefore one based on the fact that students from the two cities and rural areas that depend on the public bus system and private bus lines to go to school every day are going to need this.
The other key issue to be considered is that traffic can get stuck after the Dasara celebrations. Large crowds, late-night processions, and cars crowding traffic can affect traffic and roads at busy places and at the big venues to celebrate events.
Since there will be people on the road until the early morning and the processions will continue after the ceremonies are done, the roads will be crowded even after the last rites have been held. The district administration has taken into account all these factors and decided that a school holiday should be given. It also helps parents to have more clarity in how to plan their children’s schedules for the next day.
Deputy Commissioner Someshkar’s holiday order applies to government, government-aided and private primary and high schools across Kodagu district. Parents and students are advised to follow up in case of any additional advice from the district administration and the schools.
The announcement will also be welcomed by families concerned about how the students will go to school after the overnight celebrations. However, for primary and high schools, this order only means that colleges and other institutions should verify their arrangements with the authorities and not assume that the same holiday is also applicable for students.
Madikeri Dasara and Gonikoppal Dasara are cultural events that unite communities through traditional celebrations and public processions, and they bring together the people in Kodagu. As events take place in Kodagu, the people should be involved in the district, and also the people should be ready for them.
This is because we are trying to avoid inconvenience to the students and also for the transportation, the transportation and safety in the district when we are not able to get to those school events. Once the official announcement is made, students in the covered schools can plan their way, and parents should be ready to listen to any further information from the school authorities.
