The accident took place at Ashoka Road–Sri Harsha Road junction near Silver Jubilee Clock Tower leaving the city shocked. The Student, who died in the accident has been identified as V. Vaishnavi (second year Pre University (II PU) Science student at Sadvidya PU College in Mysuru).

Vaishnavi was travelling pillion with her father V. Venkatesh Nayaka when the mishap occurred. She was reportedly going to tuition classes by scooter when it was allegedly hit from behind by the KSRTC bus. She fell down onto the road after which the bus reportedly ran over her and she died on the spot.

Vaishnavi was the only daughter of V. Venkatesh Nayaka and Jyothi residing in N.R Mohalla near Maruthi Circle in Mysuru. The sudden death of their daughter has made an ordinary morning into an unimaginable tragedy for them.

Vaishnavi was doing II PU Science course at Sadvidya PU College and was at an important stage in her education. Her journey to tuition which would have been part of her daily academic routine ended in a ghastly accident.

It has once again brought home road safety risks students and two-wheeler riders face on busy city roads in the morning hours.

The accident happened at Ashoka Road–Sri Harsha Road junction near Silver Jubilee Clock Tower where vehicles are in constant movement.

The alleged collision between a public transport bus and scooter has brought road safety, distance of vehicles and caution at busy intersections to the fore.

Two wheelers are convenient for families and students but riders and pillion passengers remain vulnerable when hit by bigger vehicles even if impact is small enough two wheeler will lose balance and occupants fall on road.

The circumstances of the accident (how the KSRTC bus allegedly hit the scooter and what happened next) will have to be established through an official investigation.

Details about the bus driver’s account, possible eyewitness statements, CCTV footage, police action etc were not mentioned in the initial information on the incident so those details will be important to know how exactly the collision happened and whether any negligence or traffic violation took place.

So it wouldn’t be fair to jump to conclusions as to who is responsible until the authorities complete their inquiry.

The tragedy also reminds us of safe driving around two-wheelers. Bus and other heavy vehicle drivers need to follow at a safe distance, alert when approaching junctions and extra carefully through crowded urban areas; two-wheeler riders should wear helmets properly fastened, obey traffic rules and not make sudden manoeuvres safety precautions cannot prevent every accident but they reduce the risk of serious injury.

Vaishnavi’s death is a painful reminder of how quickly a trip can turn into tragedy a young student who was going to tuition with her father got killed in the accident; her family and those who knew her will suffer an enormous loss.

More information about the incident as it unfolds will help investigators piece together what happened but it is also likely that the investigation will determine why Vaishnavi died in the collision. The incident has also raised concerns about safety of students and everyday commuters on Mysuru’s busy roads.
