All India N.R. Congress (AINRC) winning Puducherry. The vote counting started at 8 am on Friday at six constituencies that are five Assembly and one Lok Sabha seats. The results are going to be closely watched for political signals they could give for the mood of voters and for the performance of political parties in response to recent political changes.

BJP leads in Assam and West Bengal

In Assam, BJP candidate Devasish Sharma got a big lead in the Nagaon Lok Sabha by-election against AIUDF chief Badruddin Ajmal to the disadvantage of Congress candidate Sibamoni Bora, whose position in the count is behind. There was a competition going among the BJP, Congress and AIUDF. It was called for the by-election after the former Congress MP Pradyut Bordoloi quit from Lok Sabha and he fought the Assembly election from Dispur on a BJP ticket. The result in Nagaon does not change the power balance in Parliament but it is politically significant for the parties involved.

For West Bengal, the BJP was ahead in Nandigram and Rejinagar as counts were going on. After coming to power in West Bengal earlier in 2026, these contests are important tests for the BJP. Nandigram in particular has a lot of political significance because of its history as a prominent electoral battleground and Rejinagar has also attracted attention since it is a multi-cornered election between BJP and opposition. However, results of counting should not be seen as final results in the absence of Election Commission of India verification.

TVK is making its presence felt in Tamil Nadu

Tamil Nadu's by-elections have become a major talking point because they provide an important electoral test for Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay's TVK government. Madurantakam and Dharapuram are the two constituencies in question and TVK candidates are facing competition from DMK and AIADMK.

TVK candidate K. Maragatham Kumaravel maintained a lead in Madurantakam, the TVK candidate K. Maragatham Kumaravel was the only candidate who was ahead according to the latest counting update. In Dharapuram, however, the situation was more complicated, with AIADMK candidate K. Banumathi taking the lead in some rounds and TVK candidate P. Sathyabama was a key candidate. The fluctuating numbers illustrated the close race and the need to follow the latest count data and not rely only on the early trends.

The outcome of these contests will affect both TVK’s popularity in the state, and its capacity to gather support if it becomes a government party. For the DMK and AIADMK, the bypolls will provide an opportunity to gauge their support base and political stance against the new ruling party and by-elections will also provide them with a glimpse of their political base.

AINRC candidate Ashok Anand wins in Puducherry

In Puducherry, AINRC candidate Ashok Anand has won the Thattanchavady Assembly by-election and the party under Chief Minister N. Rangasamy. Anand secured 13,358 votes and Congress candidate E. Vinayagam got 4,876 votes. DMK candidate K. Sethu Selvam came third with 2,664 votes. Anand's margin of victory was 8,482 votes.

The by-election was required after Rangasamy resigned from Thattanchavady seat as he won both Thattanchavady and Mangalam in the April 2026 Assembly election. The result strengthens AINRC's position in the constituency and helps the ruling alliance in Puducherry.

What are the 2026 Bypoll results?

The results of the four regions in these four regions have different political implications. BJP's lead in Assam and West Bengal shows strong performance in the areas where the counting was going on. TVK's performance in Tamil Nadu shows how much attention is paying attention towards Vijay's political leadership while AINRC's victory in Puducherry shows that it is clearly the ruling party's victory in Puducherry and the good performance of its local affiliate is a surprise.

By-elections are limited in scale and cannot necessarily predict future state or national elections. But parties can assess voter support, assess campaign tactics and look at where political direction might be required to intervene.

In the course of counting updates, the difference between leads and declared victories is still important. The Election Commission final result will determine the final results in each constituency. For now, the October 2026 bypolls have placed BJP, TVK and AINRC on the front page of the political news.
