A dispute over a seat for senior citizens inside a Delhi Metro coach turned fatal after a 48-year-old man died following a physical fight in Delhi's Supreme Court Metro station.
The incident, which took place on October 8, has led to the arrest of a former IAS officer and his son. Police sources said the deceased, Pawan Sharma, was slapped and pushed, and that the two were at the same place when the police asked the latter to leave. It has given rise to fears about safety and the effects of violent confrontations on the public transport system.
Delhi Police and details in the FIR said Sharma had a fight with Sanjay Pratap Singh, former IAS officer, and Sidharth Singh, son of the officer. The argument began in a Metro coach on a seat reserved for senior citizens. During the dispute, the two accused slapped and pushed Sharma, causing him to fall to the ground.
Sharma suffered a serious head injury and began bleeding; the police said the head injury was believed to be linked to his death, but the precise reasons behind the fight and the manner in which the fatal injury occurred remain under investigation.
The Metro staff rushed Sharma to Lok Nayak Jai Prakash Hospital for treatment after the incident, but doctors at the hospital declared him dead. The incident occurred on October 8 at the Supreme Court Metro station, which serves the passengers travelling through the centre of Delhi.
On October 9, the death attracted police action when Sharma's mother, Durga Sharma, filed a complaint against two men at the scene. Her complaint led to the filing of a case against the two men who were involved in the clash. The incident has since been taken to police for investigation to establish the sequence and who is to blame.
The FIR was registered under Sections 105 and 3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). Section 105 deals with culpable homicide not amounting to murder, while Section 3(5) deals with acts committed by several persons in furtherance of their common intention. These provisions form the legal basis of the case as described in the police report.
Both accused were arrested after the registration of the FIR, sources said. The investigation will look at the evidence at hand, witness accounts, and other relevant details to determine the reality of what occurred in the Metro coach. The allegations against the accused will be investigated in the legal process, and the case will be reviewed further in court.
The media has also reported on the professional background of the two accused. Sanjay Pratap Singh, a former IAS officer who was arrested by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in connection with an alleged bribery case, is a lawyer, and his son Sidharth Singh is a lawyer from the Supreme Court of India.
These facts have brought more public attention to this incident. But that case of the former IAS officer is separate from the present investigation, and nothing of this can be used as evidence of guilt in the Metro death case. The present allegations are about the events of October 8 and will be investigated on the basis of the evidence collected by the investigating authorities.
Delhi Police are still investigating the reasons for the confrontation between Sharma and the two accused. In addition, they will need to establish how the argument escalated, how the physical assault occurred, and the events immediately preceding Sharma's fall and head injury. Witness statements and any CCTV footage or other relevant evidence can help to clarify the sequence of events.
The case is also a reminder of the need to resolve disputes in a peaceful manner, particularly in crowded public spaces where a sudden confrontation may have serious consequences. Additional evidence and information on the incident will be unearthed as the investigation develops. The main question at this point is how a dispute over a reserved Metro seat turned into a fatal incident that claimed the life of a 48-year-old passenger.
