Delhi residents have been warned to be alert as heavy rainfall, thunderstorms and strong winds are likely in several parts of the national capital.
India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued red alert for all districts of Delhi saying intense weather is likely during next three hours. The warning comes after overnight rain brought a change in weather conditions and a sharp fall in temperature across city.
As per the latest IMD nowcast bulletin issued at 8:15 AM on Friday, October 30 the red alert will continue till 11:15 AM.
The weather department has forecast light to moderate rainfall with thunderstorms and lightning in most parts of Delhi and isolated places may see heavy rain. Strong surface winds (25–35 kmph) are also likely along with gusts between 40 and 45 kmph.
The sudden change of weather has been a relief from relatively warm weather but the possibility of heavy rain and thunderstorms also means traffic movement could be affected, waterlogging will occur and public safety is threatened.
Residents have been urged to exercise caution while travelling (especially during the warning period).IMD Issues Red Alert for All Districts of Delhi.
IMD issued red alert for all 11 districts of the national capital. They are:
- Central Delhi
- East Delhi
- New Delhi
- North Delhi
- North-East Delhi
- North-West Delhi
- Shahdara
- South Delhi
- South-East Delhi
- South-West Delhi
- West Delhi
Thunderstorms with lightning and rainfall are expected at some places. Heavy showers at isolated places may lead to temporary waterlogging (low-lying areas, poor drainage facilities).
Strong winds associated with thunderstorms also increase the likelihood of falling branches, temporary disruption to electricity supply and problems for commuters. People travelling on two-wheelers should be especially careful during periods of heavy rain and strong winds.
Yellow Alert For Rest Of The Day. Apart from the short-lived red alert, IMD has also issued a yellow alert for Delhi for rest of Friday as well. The department has forecast generally cloudy sky with one or two spells of very light to light rain at many places and moderate rain at isolated places.
Thunderstorms with lightning and light to moderate rainfall are expected during morning and forenoon hours. Weather conditions may improve after morning rain activity but cloudy conditions may continue through the day.

The IMD city forecast says that Delhi’s minimum temperature will be around 17 degrees Celsius and maximum temperature may reach about 27 degrees Celsius on October 30. The department has issued partly cloudy skies and no weather warning for October 31.
Delhi’s temperature has come down overnight due to rain. Delhi has been raining continuously through Thursday night and temperatures have fallen considerably. The change in weather has given an early winter feeling to several parts of the capital.
The overnight showers also improved Delhi’s air quality. On Friday morning the city’s Air Quality Index (AQI) stood at 133 at 4 AM — moderate — compared to readings above 200 earlier in the week.
The improvement in air quality is good news for residents who have been dealing with pollution issues. But rainfall can affect air quality differently depending on weather conditions and pollution sources.
Rainfall Warning for Neighbouring States. It is not just Delhi that will be affected by weather conditions being unsettled at present. Several neighbouring states are also expected to receive rainfall, thunderstorms and strong winds.
Orange alert has been issued for parts of Uttarakhand Nainital, Champawat, Pithoragarh, Bageshwar and Chamoli districts for thunderstorms, hailstorms and gusty winds accompanied by heavy rain. The changing weather also prompted authorities to caution travellers heading towards high altitude destinations.
Safety Advisory: What Should Delhi Residents Do?
Red alert is in force so residents should take precautions to avoid weather incidents. People should not travel unnecessarily during heavy rainfall and thunderstorms; those who have to commute can check traffic updates and avoid roads that are waterlogged.
Residents should also not stand under trees or near electric poles or close to temporary structures during thunderstorms and strong winds. Lightning activity should be avoided indoors; electrical appliances should be disconnected if severe thunderstorms occur.
Motorists should drive slowly, keep a safe distance from other vehicles and avoid flooded roads. Pedestrians should be careful around open drains and waterlogged streets.
Overall Delhi is likely to get another spell of unsettled weather on 30 Oct 2026. Rainfall has brought relief from pollution and falling temperatures but IMD’s red alert reminds us that caution is needed. Residents should continue to watch official weather updates and follow safety advisories till conditions improve.
