Bangkok has declared all 50 districts of the Thai capital disaster areas after several days of heavy rainfall caused widespread flooding and waterlogging, but also major traffic problems. The declaration was made on 26 September 2026 after authorities couldn’t control the rising water level in a number of parts of the city.
The situation has affected roads, homes and businesses and daily travel and there is waterlogging in some areas and some people have been stranded at home and in other places. And officials have warned residents to be watchful of the rain as more rain is expected.
All 50 Bangkok Districts covered
Bangkok Metropolitan Administration expanded disaster declaration to include all 50 districts in the capital. This will give an outline for authorities and local agencies to deal with flooding and assist affected people.
Bangkok Governor Chadchart Sittipunt said almost 300 millimetres of rain had fallen in the capital since Thursday afternoon. Eastern parts of Bangkok were among the worst hit and a number of canals were inundated with water levels.
Heavy Rain Disrupts Traffic
The heavy rains have resulted in flooded roads and severe traffic problems due to continuous rainfall. Water poured into homes and businesses in some locations, and residents faced difficulties moving around the city because of flooded roads.
As rainfall continues to fill the canals, authorities are pumping water out and managing the canals. The governor also asked people, especially those living around the canals, to be careful.
The flooding has complicated the problem for commuters, with some roads becoming very difficult or even impossible for vehicles to cross because of the flooding.
TMD Warns of More Heavy Rain
The Thai Meteorological Department has warned that the difficult weather conditions are not over. Its September 26 advisory said an active low-pressure system affecting the lower Central region, including Bangkok and surrounding areas, could bring heavy to very heavy rainfall.
The TMD's broader forecast issued on September 23 warned of heavy to very heavy rain from September 23 to 27, with Bangkok and surrounding areas among the regions at risk. Accumulated rainfall could trigger flash floods and overflows, especially in low-lying areas and near waterways.
Rain Expected Through September 27
According to the latest TMD forecast, Bangkok could continue to experience widespread thunderstorms and isolated very heavy rain through September 27. Residents and visitors will have to deal with flooding and travel disruption as authorities monitor water levels.
Officials are therefore advising residents in vulnerable areas to stay alert, follow local instructions and avoid unnecessary travel through flooded roads.
