The incident was reported on a flight from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia to Kochi, Kerala, as a Batik Air. The passenger, 34-year-old Jamsheer Athanikkal, tried to open one of the aircraft's emergency exit doors during flight and raised panic among passengers, the Malaysian airline said.

The cabin crew saw very soon the behavior and intervened so that the situation wouldn’t escalate. Members of the flight also intervened to help the man stay calm and avoid him getting to an emergency exit.

In spite of this very dangerous situation, the flight continued to its destination. Pilots were in control of the aircraft until it landed at Cochin International Airport on a normal flight and there were no injuries to passengers or crew members.

After landing, airport security and local law enforcement walked up to the aircraft and took the accused passenger into custody on board. Police later confirmed Jamsheer Athanikkal was arrested for attempting to disrupt the safety of the flight. Now investigators are investigating the motives of his actions and whether it was physical or psychological.

Commercial airline emergency exit doors have many safety mechanisms and therefore are typically not opened at normal cruising altitude and are not normally opened because of the difference in cabin pressure and outside air pressure. But any attempt to interfere with aircraft safety procedures is treated as a serious offense and has to be taken up instantly by the aircraft crew.

The incident has shown yet again the importance of cabin crew training and passenger assistance in a crisis. Airlines staff are regularly trained to respond to disruptive passengers, medical emergencies and potential security threats. The crew and passengers worked together in this circumstance and in this case prevented the situation from becoming more serious.

The aircraft is not damaged, Batik Air said. The airline will cooperate fully with airport authorities and law enforcement agencies.

Air travel remains one of the safest modes of transportation due to the global safety standards of airline and aviation regulators. Disruptive passenger incidents are relatively rare, but they are a major issue if not addressed for a long time.

The case is still under investigation and more charges could be filed based on the results. And passengers on board the flight seemed to be relieved that the situation was not only resolved but the situation was contained before it escalated into a more serious emergency.

The incident serves as a reminder of the critical role of cabin crews, security personnel, and passengers in ensuring the safety of everyone on board during unexpected situations.
