Three people have been arrested in connection with the Jamui harassment case in Bihar after a video of two minor students being allegedly harassed by a group was posted on social media. Police have also identified around seven persons involved in the incident and are still trying to apprehend those who remain at large.
The incident took place on the evening of September 19 in the area of Jamui town police station. The two victims, a minor boy and a minor girl who were friends and attended the same coaching institute, had been going to the area to take photographs after they had their coaching classes. They were stopped when they came back.
The case got more attention when videos of the incident appeared on social media. The video shows a group around the teens, and that the girl is physically assaulted and the boy is also touched inappropriately, they say.
But the police were aware of the video and used it to find the victims and start the investigation, Jamui Superintendent of Police Vishwajeet Dayal said. Six to seven people were captured from the footage, and investigators have since identified those linked to the incident, police said.

Three persons were arrested after the investigation. Mithilesh, Pramod and Golu Kumar were identified as the arrested individuals, and the search for the remaining suspects is on.
Police have registered a case and are investigating the allegations. Other reports have said provisions of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act have been invoked, given that the victims are minors.
The incident, in turn, has attracted the attention of the National Commission for Women (NCW). The Commission took suo motu cognisance of the case and directed Bihar authorities to act. It has also highlighted the issue of video circulation and asked that the government not share the video again.
The viral footage has also piqued public interest because the victims were minors. Police have asked for it to be released for the investigation and for the circumstances of the incident and the role of each person involved to be known.
The case also has prompted demands for tough legal action against those responsible. There is video evidence in the case, statements, and other information, and police will be looking for the rest of the people who were involved.
The Jamui police investigation will continue in the coming days with three arrests and several other suspects being sought, officers said. “There is still more work, and the evidence in the investigation will be investigated further,” police said.
