Dubai is now inching towards its world-class public transportation system expanding its world-class public transportation network with the Dubai Metro Blue Line.
The ambitious project will connect the city’s core residential, commercial and educational districts, and is in line with their long-term urban development goals as part of the Dubai 2040 Urban Master Plan.
The Blue Line will add about 30 kilometers to Dubai’s metro network and will have 14 stations to connect the Red and Green Metro lines. The project will shorten travel times, reduce road congestion, and promote public transportation in the emirate.
The metro line will start at Centrepoint Station on the Red Line and pass through a number of important neighborhoods. The other branch will connect from Creek Station on the Green Line. The two branches will meet before moving on to Dubai International Academic City, one of the city’s major educational hubs.
The Blue Line is expected to serve rapidly growing communities such as Mirdif, Al Warqa, International City, Ras Al Khor, Dubai Silicon Oasis and Dubai International Academic City. These areas have been experiencing high population growth over the last decade and hence need efficient and sustainable transport.
The most important engineering component of the project will be a new metro bridge connecting Dubai Creek and will be one of the city’s urban transportation hallmarks.
Modern stations with technology, accessibility, energy efficiency, and seamless connections to buses, taxis, and other public transport services will also be used to drive this project.
Construction of the Dubai Metro Blue Line officially started after the award of major contracts. Tunnel excavation, elevated tracks, station building, signaling systems and infrastructure development are being done in an advanced way to minimize disturbances and maintain high safety and environmental standards.
The Blue Line will open by 2029, on the 20th anniversary of the Dubai Metro.
Once it is operational, the line will draw hundreds of thousands of people per day and reduce reliance on private vehicles, making the city more like a transit service.
The Blue Line is also a key part of Dubai’s sustainability agenda with carbon reduction and green urban mobility. Public transport access to metro transport will encourage more residents and visitors to use the metro rather than private cars to reduce vehicle traffic in the city.
Urban planners believe the project will boost property values, generate commercial activity and offer more opportunities for schools, universities, business districts and residential neighborhoods. Better transport infrastructure will be the key in order to spur more investment in developing the areas along metro corridors of development.
As Dubai continues to grow and become one of the world's leading smart cities, the Metro Blue Line is yet another step towards a faster, more connected and sustainable transport system.
Once built, it will be an integral part of the emirate's growing public transport system and will contribute to the development of its public transport system for residents, businesses, students and tourists.
