‘I’m Not a Rapist’: Trump Hits Back at Shooter’s Manifesto After White House Dinner Shooting

Trump strongly counters explosive allegations in a manifesto linked to the suspect of the jaw-dropping shooting at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner. Trump referred to the man as “a sick person” when he claimed, “I’m not a rapist.”

After excerpts from the man's manifesto appeared, incendiary rhetoric within the manifesto apparently accused Trump and his administration of grave crimes. Trump responded in rage in a later interview to those allegations, arguing that both their basis and the state of mind of the suspect were unreasonable.

The 31-year-old suspect, who investigators named Cole Allen, also apparently penned a lengthy manifesto shortly before the attack. Officers suspect the document listed complaints against the Trump administration and listed government officials as its chief targets. The shooting had taken place outside the Washington Hilton hotel, where the high-profile dinner was being held.

Gunfire sent panic through the crowd, including journalists, politicians and celebrities. Secret Service agents arrived and stopped the attacker from reaching the primary site: the event. One officer suffered an injury, but was able to escape because of his protective equipment. The suspect appeared to be from California, and checked into the hotel days in advance.

That presented significant security problems. The incident has since led to a broader review of protection at the places of big political gatherings. Trump returned to his place of residence quickly, and before the incident started, he had already condemned the venue’s defences. He also described it as deeply unsettling to the attacker, pointing to what he described as "hateful" elements of the manifesto.

The underlying manifesto itself has been the focus of scrutiny since; the language, motivations and perhaps even ideological leanings in its authors have been the focus of investigators as well. But he also said he did not expect forgiveness, and also had a well-prepared attack, raising fears about political violence that persisted throughout the United States.

The shooting, which has had a wide federal investigation of the shooting, has rekindled discussions about political rhetoric in American politics, public safety and the safety of high-profile events with senior government officials.
