UK-based entrepreneur and social media star Igho Ubiribo, 43, died in Thailand after complications from a cosmetic penis enlargement surgery. Ubiribo was on holiday in Bangkok with his wife Danielle Simba Allen when he got the surgery done in a local hospital. He later collapsed with chest pain and died after doctors attempted for several hours to revive him.
According to evidence presented at the Inner West London Coroner's Court, Ubiribo received injections of hyaluronic acid and lidocaine during the cosmetic procedure. The subsequent investigation revealed he suffered a fatal pulmonary embolism, a condition in which a blood vessel supplying the lungs is blocked.
The case has raised the issue of the possible effects of cosmetic procedures and injectable treatments and complications following treatment.
Ubiribo Developed Chest Pain After Procedure
Ubiribo began experiencing chest pain after the cosmetic procedure, he said. He later went to his wife to seek a massage, as he was becoming increasingly ill, the Daily Mail claims.
He lost consciousness twice before emergency medical help was sought. An ambulance took him to Sukhumvit Hospital in Bangkok, where doctors found that he was suffering from a pulmonary embolism.
His condition deteriorated rapidly, and he was admitted to the intensive care unit. Medical staff performed CPR for over 100 minutes in an attempt to save his life. Despite the lengthy resuscitation efforts, Ubiribo died on the morning of March 6.
Post-Mortem Examination Finds Injectable Material
After his death, a post-mortem examination was carried out in the UK. According to evidence presented during the coroner's proceedings, cellular material found in Ubiribo's lungs was consistent with the hyaluronic acid used during the injection procedure.
The evidence indicated that 40 millilitres of hyaluronic acid and lidocaine had been administered during the treatment.
Assistant Coroner Jean Harkin concluded that Ubiribo died from a pulmonary embolism caused by a hyaluronic acid injection. The finding offered a medical explanation for the sudden deterioration that followed the cosmetic procedure.
The case highlights the fact that injectable cosmetic treatments can be very serious medical risks even when undertaken for elective or aesthetic purposes. Medical complications can sometimes develop rapidly and need immediate emergency intervention.
