One Indian citizen was killed and another was injured on Wednesday in a new wave of Russian missile and drone attacks across Ukraine as the human costs of war continue to mount. The strikes took place a day after Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi met Russian President Vladimir Putin and repeated India’s plea for peace and an end to the conflict.
According to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Russia launched a large-scale overnight assault with ballistic missiles, drones and other aerial weapons on several Ukrainian regions. At least 12 people were killed and dozens wounded in the attack. One of them was an Indian citizen, and another Indian citizen was injured in the attack.
The deceased Indian national has been identified by diaspora sources as a 40-year-old man from Gujarat, but official confirmation on his identity is still awaited. The injured Indian citizen, who is believed to be a Telangana resident, is still in stable condition and is receiving medical help, it said.
The latest attack was part of one of the most intense phases of Russian aerial bombardment in recent months. Ukrainian officials said Kyiv and several other regions, including Odesa, Kherson, Donetsk, Zaporizhzhia, Kharkiv, Sumy, Chernihiv, Zhytomyr, and Dnipro, were targeted. Residential buildings, civilian infrastructure and railway facilities were hit hard.
Many people lost their lives in Kyiv, including several people who were among those who lost their lives as missiles and drones struck railway and residential areas. Ukrainian authorities said the attacks were part of a sustained campaign designed to disrupt civilian life and weaken public morale. The latest attack was the sixth consecutive day of heavy Russian attacks on the Ukrainian capital.
The incident was particularly significant as it happened shortly after Prime Minister Narendra Modi met with Russian President Putin. Modi told them the war should end and that peace should be reached through dialogue and diplomacy. “The war has brought great suffering for humanity,” he said.

Despite all the diplomacy going on in the world, the fighting between Russia and Ukraine is still ongoing. Russian forces continue to operate on a number of fronts and Ukrainian troops have launched attacks on Russia’s infrastructure and military targets. Peace negotiations have so far failed to make tangible progress.
One Indian citizen’s killing is one of the many reminders of the war’s effect on people from all parts of the world. India has always argued that dialogue and diplomacy are the only options for resolution and has sought to protect civilians who are caught in the crossfire.
