Thoothukudi, Tamil Nadu: The counting of hundi offerings collected during the last month at Arulmigu Subramania Swamy Temple in Thoothukudi was conducted on 1 September with Temple Trustee Arulmugan and Joint Commissioner Arunachalam.
The monthly hundi counting process involved more than 100 temple employees and members of the temple service group, and they counted and recorded the offerings made by devotees. This was done as part of the temple’s usual process of accounting for the offerings received from worshipers.
According to the information released after the counting, devotees made ₹4,21,56,205 in cash payments in the last month. The large amount can be attributed to the continuing flow of devotees to the prominent temple and their contribution as part of religious offerings.
Aside from money, people also gave huge quantities of precious metals to the temple. They delivered 1,022 grams of gold and 22,292 grams of silver in the collection period. Such gifts are often made by devotees who wish for blessings and express their commitment to the temple.
The temple also received 1,447 foreign currencies, indicating that devotees from outside India also contributed to the hundi. Such foreign currency payments will be part of the temple’s accounting and prescribed procedures for handling such contributions.

The hundi-counting exercise was conducted in the presence of senior temple officials to oversee the process. More than 100 employees and service-group members were involved to count and document the large amount of cash, coins, precious metals and other offerings.
Temple hundi collections are closely followed in Tamil Nadu, especially when some shrines report large offerings. The amount collected indicates the number of devotees visiting temples and the scale of contributions given during religious periods.
