Two Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD) officers were wounded in an officer-involved shooting Wednesday night on the city’s east side, and the suspect was killed, police said. An emergency was declared and law enforcement operations intensified.
The two officers were taken to a hospital for treatment after being shot during the incident. The extent of their wounds has not yet been disclosed publicly or a firm update on their condition has been given.
According to initial reports, one of the officers who was shot in the leg was a police officer and another was shot in the chest. The shooting was still being investigated, but there were no immediate reports of a man being seriously wounded.
The suspect was also shot by responding officers during the encounter and died, the police said in a police update. The suspect’s identity has not yet been released.
The shooting took place in the jurisdiction of the IMPD East District and a large response saw several police units and emergency workers on the scene. Investigators were in the area as they sorted out what led to the shooting.
The incident was first reported through scanner traffic and emergency responders rushed to the area around East 38th Street and North Franklin Road. There was a critical incident and police remained on site processing the scene.
