Iran has made a major reshuffle of its top military leadership, with Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei formally appointing six senior commanders to top military ranks as the nation is fighting a war and under heavy pressure on security.
The appointments announced on August 10 formalise a wartime command structure that had operated for months without permanent decrees.
The changes affect Iran’s Armed Forces, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), the IRGC Navy and the Basij paramilitary organisation.
1. Ali Abdollahi - Armed Forces Chief of Staff
Ali Abdollahi has been appointed chief of staff of Iran’s Armed Forces, replacing Abdolrahim Mousavi, who was killed during the first strikes of the war. Abdollahi previously commanded the Khatam al-Anbiya Central Headquarters, Iran’s main wartime operational command.
2. Kioumars Heydari - Deputy Chief of Staff
Former Army Ground Forces commander Kioumars Heydari has been appointed deputy chief of staff. His appointment introduces an experienced Army commander directly into the new military leadership structure.
3. Ahmad Vahidi - IRGC Commander
Ahmad Vahidi has been appointed commander-in-chief of the powerful Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps and promoted to major general. Vahidi had already been formally announced as the IRGC chief after the death of Mohammad Pakpour.
4. Mostafa Izadi - Deputy IRGC Commander
Mostafa Izadi, who previously headed the Cyber and New Threats Headquarters of the Khatam al-Anbiya Central Headquarters, has been appointed deputy commander-in-chief of the IRGC.
5. Ali Azmaei - IRGC Navy Commander
Rear Admiral Ali Azmaei has been officially appointed commander of the IRGC Navy. He had emerged publicly in the role in July after the killing of former naval commander Alireza Tangsiri.
6. Hossein Taeb - Basij Commander
Hossein Taeb, who once headed the IRGC Intelligence Organization, has been appointed as commander of the Basij paramilitary force. He will return to a powerful operational role since he was a member of the intelligence and security establishment in Tehran for decades.
Why the Reshuffle Matters
The appointments come as Iran continues to deal with major military and security problems following strikes that killed multiple senior commanders. Khamenei has also ordered the completion of an integration process between the Armed Forces General Staff and Khatam al-Anbiya Central Headquarters.
But the reshuffle does not fill every senior security vacancy. Iran’s two main IRGC intelligence organisations still lack publicly announced permanent chiefs, while the Defence Ministry and Intelligence Ministry also remain without permanent ministers.
The latest changes represent more than routine military appointments. They signal an effort by Tehran to strengthen command continuity, consolidate wartime decision-making and place experienced security figures in strategically important positions as the conflict continues.
