Iran Postpones Khamenei’s State Funeral Amid Massive Strikes and Successor Threats

In a remarkable reversal which reveals the turmoil engulfing the Islamic Republic, the Iranian state television declared today, that the state funeral and farewell ceremonies for late Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei have been postponed indefinitely. The three days of mourning and public tribute, planned to start at 10 p.m. tonight at Imam Khomeini Grand Mosque, were called off just hours before the gates were set to open.

Official Reason: "Unprecedented Turnout"

The Islamic Development Coordination Council said in a statement through the Fars News Agency that the delay was necessary to help manage the logistical challenge of an “unprecedented influx” of mourners. “Because of the anticipated overflow of the faithful and the need to further expand infrastructure to uphold the safety of the ‘Ummah,’ we have postponed the farewell of our martyred Imam. “A new schedule will be announced shortly,” the statement said.

The Reality on the Ground: A Capital Under Fire

While logistics management may be the official narrative, independent observers and the regional news media claim the postponement is indicative the security situation is deteriorating.

  1. Fierce Airstrikes: Loud explosions broke out in eastern Tehran Wednesday afternoon. The Israeli military has ramped up its "wave of strikes," reportedly targeting regime infrastructure and missile storage in Isfahan and the capital.
  2. Succession Turmoil: The delay comes as reports abound that the Assembly of Experts is due to name a new Supreme Leader with Khamenei's son, Mojtaba, now standing out as the number one possibility.
  3. Assassination Threats: Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz has made clear that anyone who inherits the post and continues the path of the previous regime would be an "unequivocal target for elimination," rendering an enormous, standing public meeting in a fixed spot a catastrophic security threat for the ruling elite.

A Nation in Limbo

Khamenei, 36-year Iranian leader, was killed on 28 February during the first salvos of Operation Epic Fury, the joint U.S.-Israeli offensive. Although his burial in Mashhad, near the Imam Reza shrine, is eventually expected, the body is now stored somewhere safe and hidden.

The delay reflects the recent postponement of the funeral for Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah, which was also delayed indefinitely due to the inability to guarantee safety from ongoing airstrikes.

Retaliation Continues

With the funeral canceled, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) announced its 17th wave of counter-offensive "Honest Promise 4," claiming to have fired 40 missiles on U.S. and Israeli targets throughout the region in which it operates. With the war nearing its fifth day, and the “City of Gold” (Dubai) struggling with its own repercussions tacit delay here, after all the postponement of the funeral is a signal that Tehran is, at present at least, more concerned with survival than ceremony.
