Aidal Wave A tidal wave of Israeli airstrikes rolled through Lebanon Wednesday, killing at least 254 and injuring more than 1,160 others. The escalation, which the Israeli military calls a "surprise strike," happens just as a two-week recently negotiated ceasefire between the United States and Iran seemingly stands in the line of fire.
A Day of Disaster
The bombings hit more than 100 Hezbollah military bases nationwide, including heavily populated centers in the heart of Beirut, according to Lebanon’s Civil Defence.
- Attack Speed: According to reports, the Israeli military (IDF) was able to bombard 100 targets in about 10 minutes.
- Casualty Toll: According to official reports, 254 were killed and more than 1,160 injured.
- Emergency Response: Minister of Health told people to clear streets to let ambulances pass; first responders battling to stamp out flames in leveled buildings.
Vice President JD Vance addressed the friction on Wednesday, saying there had been a "legitimate misunderstanding." “I think the Iranians believed that the ceasefire would include Lebanon and it simply didn’t,” Vance said. "We never made that promise... If Iran allows this negotiation to fall apart … that’s ultimately their choice. We think that would be dumb."
Trump reflected a similar sentiment when he labeled the conflict in Lebanon a “separate skirmish” that wasn’t included in the primary agreement.
Israel’s Strategic Objectives
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Israel Katz have refused to budge: The war on Hezbollah will continue until the group is disarmed and threats to northern Israel are eradicated. Brigadier General Effie Defrin, an Israeli military spokesman, described the total disarmament of Hezbollah as a "top objective."
In the meantime, Minister Katz directly warned the leader of Hezbollah Naim Qassem; he said his "personal turn will come," if the group continues to act on behalf of Iran. Iran Lays off The "surprise strike" has prompted officials who serve the government in Iran to mention how soon Tehran could withdraw from the ceasefire.
Sources close to the Iranian government informed the Tasnim news agency of their commitment, saying if Israel "persists in violating the truce in Lebanon," they are ready for a return to war across much of the region.
