As a result, at least 30 of the individuals were killed in a horrific road accident in Kano State, Nigeria after a passenger truck lost control and crashed in the early hours of Sunday, February 8, 2026. The tragedy in the Gezawa Local Government Area once again brought to stark relief the dangers of reckless driving and ineffectual road safety controls across the area.

Tragedy at Kwanar Barde: Fatal Out-of-Control

The accident occurred at Kwanar Barde, a town situated along the highway in the Gezawa Local Government Area of Kano State. Reports from the office of the Governor, Kano, indicate that the vehicle a large trailer with a combination of menial passengers and equipment was heading towards Gujungu, and the driver lost control.

Critical Information about the Event

Cause: Authorities have attributed this crash to both reckless driving and excessive speeding. Investigators at first suggest the driver could not control the speed at which the trailer veered off road and overturned afterwards.

Toll: Initial reports from the Kano State Government reported 30 deaths but some early reports from Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) show it would be about 7 dead at that moment and 70 injured. Local witnesses and state officials maintain that the toll is higher, given the number of passengers being illegally transported in the cargo area.

Dangerous Practice: The truck was “overloaded,” a popular but perilous practice in Nigeria, where trucks that have heavy cargo and are designed for transport services carry dozens of people over state lines.

Governor’s Solution: Health Care for No Cost and Mourning

Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf said in his statement that the incident was “heartbreaking” and a monumental loss for the state. “This incident is a great loss, not just to the families affected by the incident, but to the people of Kano State,” the Governor said through his spokesman, Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa.

Responses to the emergency

  • Medical Relief: The Governor has ordered the Ministry of Health to offer free medical treatment to all survivors currently in hospitals, including Sir Sunusi Specialist Hospital and Gezawa General Hospital.
  • Humanitarian Assistance: The Office of the Special Adviser on Humanitarian Affairs has been commissioned to evaluate the needs of the victims’ families to aid them urgently.
  • Strict Enforcement: The state is reinvigorating its calls for the FRSC to crack down on the “illegal conveyance of passengers in goods vehicles.”

The Nigerian Highways Have Been a Never-Ending Nightmare

Road accidents are prevalent in Nigeria and are commonly attributed to both ageing and inadequate infrastructures, as well as violation of existing traffic laws. This most recent tragedy in Kano follows a similar high-profile event involving public figures in December, adding to the national calls for a “total overhaul” of road safety protocols.

Rescue operations have ended as of Monday morning, and the state has started a mourning for the victims.
