Spain’s famous La Tomatina festival has once again transformed the streets of Buñol into a sea of red as thousands of participants gathered for one of the world’s most unusual and colourful celebrations.
The annual event is known for its giant food fight, with people throwing tomatoes at one another during an hour-long celebration filled with excitement, laughter and chaos.
La Tomatina has become an international festival popular with tourists from all over the world in the town of Buñol in the vicinity of Valencia.
People typically don’t mind ruining their clothes before they walk onto the crowded streets of Buñol in which trucks with ripe tomatoes arrive to start the famous food fight.
This year more than 150,000 kilograms of tomatoes are being used during the celebration, making the streets a bright red battlefield.
Once the signal is given, participants start grabbing tomatoes and throwing them at friends, strangers and anyone nearby. Within minutes the streets are covered with tomato pulp and juice.The tomato fight itself lasts about an hour. Although chaotic, it is a tradition and safety measures are followed by many people.
The tomatoes are squashed before throwing so that people do not get hurt, while officials and organizers try to manage the large crowds.
La Tomatina dates back to 1945 when a tomato throwing incident occurred in a local parade. What started as an unplanned street fight became a tradition.
Over the years the festival came to be a popular one and is now one of Spain’s most common festivals.

With thousands upon thousands of people in the vicinity, La Tomatina is proving that a local tradition can be turned into an international tourist destination.
