 Why May 17?

In 1865 the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) was founded on the date. It also commemorates the signing of the first International Telegraph Convention, forming the basis for global communication networks.

 History and Evolution.

Even as World Telecommunication Day was born, it was expanded in 2006 to involve the Information Society, indicating a more important place for the internet and digital technologies. The United Nations officially acknowledged the bigger picture, stressing the involvement of ICT (Information and Communication Technology) in global progress.

Global Significance.

Telecommunication technologies — from telephones and satellites to the internet and mobile networks — have transformed how people communicate, learn and do business. They are essential in education, healthcare,

disaster management and economic development.

At the same time, reliable services on the internet have not reached millions of people around the world. This digital divide restricts opportunities and demonstrates the demand for inclusive and low-cost connectivity.

Themes and Celebrations.

Each year WTISD is recognized using a specific theme reflecting global challenges in digital inclusion, cybersecurity and sustainable development. Seminars, workshops and awareness campaigns are organized by governments, tech companies and organizations.

Why It Matters Today.

Communication technology is also the backbone of democracy that enables people to be participants in society, in an increasingly digital world. The COVID-19 outbreak confirmed what’s absolutely crucial and must be brought to this day for workplace digital connectivity, remote employment, online schooling and healthcare access.

A Connected Future.

World Telecommunication and Information Society Day is more than a celebration — it encourages international collaboration towards bridging the digital divide and makes sure that no one is left behind in this digital age. On May 17, consider the power of connectivity — because communication is the secret to a more inclusive and innovative world
